No thanks to signing Schenn to that contract, $7.5M
to a 29 year old is a bad idea.

Trading Roslovic for a couple picks is also a bad idea.

I’d love to target Schenn next year. But only if it’s for like 5x5M or 3x6M somewhere in there. But if the young D guys aren’t ready, we’d need to spend on D rather than another F

If UFAs get anything like they did this year Schenn is going to get about 7.5-8.5 for 6-7 years. I'm certainly not saying he's worth it or that it's a good signing but look at the UFA C's that signed this summer and see what they signed for.

I think you're dreaming if you think Laine is going to sign for 6.5*3 this summer

What strikes me is if Niku only gets 1.75 after this coming season he probably wasn't that good. Pionk with some very bad fancy stats got $3m!

Yeah maybe. Here’s the comparables that signed this offseason:

Nelson 6M x 6
Hayes 7.1M x 7
Duchene 8M x 7
Karlsson 5.9M x 8

2 of these guys are probably 1C on their team. I don’t think anyone would call Schenn a 1C. He’ll also be older when he signs than any of these guys. That’s why I think it’ll be between 6-7M at most. And probably not 7 years. There’s also a slim chance he would take a discount to go to WPG, being a contender with good wingers for him, and kind of a hometown team. 6.5M x 4 years, similar to Shattenkirk

Karlsson was an RFA.

So his comparables are Duchene (similar production over last 3 years), and Nelson and Hayes who Schenn has been WAY better than the last 3 years. Nelson and Hayes are also indisputably 2 C's. Duchene is coming in to be a 1a/1b C with Johansen. Also Nashville is tax advantaged

Here are points by a C over the last 3 years

http://hkref.com/tiny/6TliQ
Schenn 30th
Duchene 32nd
Hayes isn't in this list for some reason but would be about 45th
Nelson 103

Goals
Duchene 23rd
Schenn 29th
Hayes (again not in the list for some reason but would be 45th)
Nelson 72nd

Duchene and Schenn are both borderline 1 C's. Not studs but good enough to be there on a poor team or excellent 2 C's

Hayes is an average 2 C

Nelson is a borderline 2 C
