Trade with NSH to get 23 man roster

Description
This is obviously depending on IF Nashville is a destination on Oshie's wish-list.
(Or when the time comes, could you make a deal with Seattle to get him back to his state of birth, captaining that expansion team)

FOR WASHINGTON,
it would clear up cap space. Smith is a decent scorer who will work for a year, until one of the right-handed kids (Leason/Sutter) might be ready. In an ideal world, I see Panik and Leason as the middle-six RWs from 2020/21 and forward.
Instead of having Siegenthaler or Djoos in the pressbox, a guy like Irwin fits the bill better. Irwin is gone in a year, and Djoos have LHD competition coming in Alexeyev and Fehervary.
After giving up two contracted players (one being an expiring RFA), getting a RFA back would be something. Allard is a right-handed D-man who was a 3rd rounder himself (therefore the pick, if you need a pick at all), with decent size and stats for Milwaukee last year.

FOR NASHVILLE,
Depth D-men like Hamhuis, Irwin and Weber are all UFAs next summer. Djoos would be an upgrade on the third pairing. This trade would leave Nashville in some cap-crunching, I am fully aware, but burying Hamhuis in AHL would solve things.

For UFA Smith, they get a player (Oshie) with several years left on his contract, though his final year(s) might be hard to swallow, I agree.
Overall, both Oshie and Djoos will/can be kept after the 19/20 season. Oshie's contract might be steep, but they're both players with a Stanley Cup ring to their names.

I can also see that Josi is an UFA to be re-signed, and he will demand a huge raise. Maybe Granlund's expiring contract will cover Josi's raise.

Still, I just throw this out there, expecting to be burned for it. :-)

" This trade would leave Nashville in some cap-crunching, I am fully aware, but burying Hamhuis in AHL would solve things. "

But the thing is that they won't bury Hamhuis

Because he's still a good-enough asset, or because of sentimental reasons?

I mean, the part where the Caps give up the better, tougher goal scoring RW to get cap space in four years? That makes sense.

Throwing in Djoos definitely gets it done. After he was healed from his broken leg last year, Djoos got seven even strength points in his last 18 games, which would put him on pace for 33. Forget Irwin. Smith only got 38 points last year, and only 30 were at evens.

I may be a Caps fan, but from what I remember of Poile, he's a pretty big fan of defensemen who can skate with the puck and make good passes, even if they don't hit a lot. Djoos reminds me a bit of Calle Johansen, and with offense like he showed at the end of last year, he could grow into a similar top pair role to what Johansen played on Poile's Caps. If he and Forsberg can speak Swedish together on the power play, that could help both do better.

Does MacLellan really do this to himself, just for cap space to keep Holtby? I mean... Holtby's pretty good, so maybe? But you also need defensemen, or even good goalies look bad. If Holtby walks, Edmonton is likely to make a play for him. How good might Koskinen look behind the Caps' defense, until Vanecek or Samsonov steps up?

The development of Samsonov and Vanecek is the most crucial part of it all, because it will determine if Holtby has leverage when negotiating a new contract. If Samsonov/Vanecek isn't ready just yet, cap needs to be shedded somewhere else in the roster.
