How much could we pay Point

Team: 2019-20 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2019
Published: Sep. 22, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming we trade everyone consuming cap without an NHL spot, don't trade any roster players, continue with a full 23 man roster, and refuse to take any risk of performance overages, ignoring the impossible position we would be in next year, this is the maximum we could pay Point.

I'm guessing ANA says no to this specific deal, but hopefully if we try hard enough we could trade those people somewhere. If not, Point has to take a very cheap bridge deal, I guess. In theory, we could pay Point more if we don't have Volkov on the team (I put him as a scratch but I'm thinking he'll actually be part of a rotation with Maroon or something), but it seems like he's secured a spot. I guess we can go a tiny bit over $9m if Volkov goes to Syracuse.

you can exceed the caps upper limit for performance bonuses (i think you can go 7.5% over), so thats an extra $1,362,500 right there

And didnt Tampa already strike out on trading Louie?

So you could either make a trade or pay him a bridge. Like 3 years at that money.

I'm not sure you can get assets back for Condon and Domingue at their current cap hits, but it shouldn't cost more than a 6th or 7th to trade one to a team like Fla, CBJ, or Col, where they have a chance to play NHL backup this year. Schenn cleared waivers last fall and would have no buried cap hit. Rutta probably would not clear waivers, but if he does, pair him with a 4th and ship him to Winnipeg. 23 players is a luxury. No bonus overages is a luxury.

The Cap situation next summer is that Tampa will have to trade any two of Point, Sergachev, Vasilevsky, or Kucherov.

Tampa can give Point a choice between 10.5Mx6 with no NTC, or cheap bridge with an NMC, if he wants to guarantee he stays in Tampa a little longer, like Shattenkirk and Killorn. He can do what he wants, but his agent will probably advise him to sign a big long term contract and accept the likelihood that he has to move next summer, unless he can convince the team that he's somehow more essential, long term, than Kucherov.

The simpler solution would be to trade Point now for picks and prospects.

Really? I know BriseBois said he was worried about performance bonuses when he traded Callahan, and that wouldn’t really have made sense if we could have 7.5% of the cap in leeway (in fact, it would have just hurt our cap situation because of Condon).

Not necessarily. Nobody wanted him on an NHL roster immediately, but now that he’s cleared, teams can put him in the AHL for $75k in cap space and then call him up whenever and it’s great risk-free depth. Before now, anyone who didn’t have the cap/desire for him in the NHL couldn’t take him without risking losing him on waivers. Now, he’s more valuable because he’s flexible.

The 7.5% over for perf bonuses is interesting, didn't know that. Brisebois still wants to keep some cap space available to accrue during the season for a possible tdl acquisition, so around 7.5x3 is still likely the highest he will be willing to go. I believe after the season starts Domingue may get moved if a team suffers an injury at G and needs someone. The Lightning will have to wait and see where the cap goes after this year, but assuming they resign Point, you can be sure neither he, Vasi or Kuch are getting traded anywhere. The notion that Tampa will have to trade 2 of their present and future core to make the cap work is comical at best. There are several players that would go before any of Point, Kuch, Vasi or Serg are traded out. Killorn, Paquette and Coburn would and/or will be traded to make room if needed(Killorn for sure, maybe Coburn or Paquette). It's a tight squeeze next year, but the bolts have always found a way to ice a pretty strong team these past few years when the "cap crunch" was going to tear them apart.
