Love how you said by Marner and not by Matthews. Haha typical

well both really, i said marner cause his signing was more recent and he was an RFA the same offseason as Point

Mackinnon's is still better but good deal all the same

Pastranak and Mackinnon are signed for similar AAV with more term left, so I wouldn't go that far, but it is a great contract and probably the best way to deal with RFAs pushing for near UFA type values on longer term deals.

I give this the edge due to Point being an RFA at the end of it.

good signing! probably back loaded so that the QO will be north of 10 mil, but TBL have 3 years to sort that out

It's only 3 years so it's not going to be a crazy high AAV.

Great bridge deal for Tampa as it helps them keep one of their best players at a relatively low AAV through the cap crunch they face in the next couple years. My guess is the new TV deal and expansion gives a big boost to the cap towards the end of this deal and then they open up the vault to keep him around long term.

I'm thinking this also helps the other teams sign their RFA holdouts as it sets the cap on their three year bridge in this ball park of $6.75M. I feel like the 5 year cap was set by Aho's $8.454M, and the longer term deal's ceiling is Marner's $10.9M (which was probably a million and a half too much).

For the TEAM! Not a "goalscorer"! wink

BriseBois: A+ Heart Eyes
Who doubted him or Pointerz commitment, after refusing to sign offersheets in the north of 8.4 million $?

Again, i have no words to our GM... We got him for 3 years for less, than Kevin Hayes.

I'm pretty sure he just signed the most lucrative 3-year bridge deal in league history! I'm not sure I would call this "a steal" for Tampa. But at least they can move forward now.

Lol imagine thinking that a 3 years, 6.75M deal for a player coming off of a 92 points season isn't a steal

what a steal. Leafs got shafted by marner

Leafs got shafted by Matthews. Marner just used the comparable Matthews established. For the money Matthews makes, it should have been a 7 or 8 year deal. The guy still hasn't played a full season.

Matthews and Marner are both rfa this year. They just signed Matthews first. Terrible deals for both players. Toronto paid a premium for 2 guys when it was completely unnecessary.

They paid him McDavid money and he literally has accomplished nothing. He can score goals I guess but totally not worth being a top 5 paid player. Especially when he’s a rfa

And ekholm and couturier

Also good deals but there's a clear #1 best contract and it belongs to the Big Mack. He's at worst, the 5th best C (I'd say higher but whatever) in the league and he makes less than Kevin Hayes

I'm sure Tampa would've preferred 8 years at $9.5M any day.

Not even close! People are fooled by the low AAV, but are ignoring the short term.

This is what we've been saying after all the RFA signings recently.

Well, not Marner.

Matthews deal seems like it was signed so long ago since it was in season but you're right. Both of those deals are terrible

Marner's contract certainly creates a new ceiling that makes a lot of these contracts look fantastic, and I do think just about every RFA, including Marner, will end up producing more than their contract costs, but all of these deals are quite a bit different than previous comparables. Points deal is quite a bit more, even in terms of cap hit percentage, than Tampa had to pay Kucherov on his 3 year bridge.

I think we are seeing a shift, but teams and players are ending up all over the place as both sides are drawing different lines in the sand over what is fair, and what is in their own best interests.
