So point signs one of the richest bridge deals I have ever seen and yet he is still underpaid.

Goddammit.

AND ONLY 9M as the 3rd year salary?!?!?

It's a 3 year bridge deal. If this were a 6-7 year deal the $$ would've been substantially higher.

Honestly ... I'm a Leaf fan ... and there's zero chance Point end's up with Marner type money over the next 6 years:

Mitch Marner

6 Year AAV = $10,890,000

Brayden Point

Year 1 (Contract 1) = $6,750,000
Year 2 (Contract 1) = $6,750,000
Year 3 (Contract 1) = $6,750,000
Year 4 (Contract 2) = $15,030,000
Year 5 (Contract 2) = $15,030,000
Year 6 (Contract 2) = $15,030,000

6 Year AAV = $10,890,000

If Tampa can keep Point's next cap-hit under $15,030,000 and his term over 2 years ... they'll come out laughing.

And if I had to guess ... I'd guess that Point's next contract will look very similar to Marner's current contract.

It’s time for Tkachuk, Rantanen, Laine, and Connor to just all sign three-year deals at 6.75 and let’s move on with the season. Get on it dawg gone it

So pissed off seeing this as a Leafs fan. I was relieved to hear Marner sign but seeing this, I don't see any love for Toronto or any sort of discount. Everyone says he took too much, by as much as 1.5mil per in excess. Even a 9mx6 deal compared to 6.75x3 for Point sounds bad when taking importance of position and term into account.

Thanks, Mitch. Thanks, Auston. Thanks, Kyle.

What strikes me is that it doesn't get any bigger on final year of the contract.

Love how you said by Marner and not by Matthews. Haha typical

They got shafted by Marner, Matthews, Nylander and maybe Tavares but don't quote me on it cuz its just my opinion

I’m okay w Tavares be he was a ufa and that’s the only way you could get him to sign. The overpaid triplets though is laughable. Especially when you didn’t need to cough up that much money.

what a steal. Leafs got shafted by marner

Not true. The Leafs shafted, or least overpaid for Marner (and Matthews and Nylander) themselves. Marner didn't force the Leafs to sign his contract. Who I think gets "shafted" by the Leafs is maybe hometown Connor Brown who was sent to Ottawa. Since the Leafs might have to go with 21 man roster, two players who should be in the NHL, living their dream and making 800,000 are now in the AHL making 70,000.

Dubas honestly should have signed all 3 of them to bridge deals.

Even if he had to overpay for bridge deals ... which would have looked something like:

$8,500,000 x 3 = Matthews (his agent reportedly asked for $9,000,000 x 3)
$7,000,000 x 3 = Marner
$5,000,000 x 3 = Nylander

Those would have saved $8,500,000 for the next 3 years ... and none of them would have gotten "paid for potential" on their next deals.

Which would force them to earn a massive extension ... or sign for something similar (possibly less) than their current contracts.

Expect Laine to sign something similar to this and Rantanen to something similar to Marner's contract.

This is now the best contract in the entire league.

Mackinnon's is still the biggest steal, yes it's 300k more, but it's also for the next four seasons

Pastranak and Mackinnon are signed for similar AAV with more term left, so I wouldn't go that far, but it is a great contract and probably the best way to deal with RFAs pushing for near UFA type values on longer term deals.

True. However if you consider the Cap % on signing this is less than those two examples by a considerable amount.

A friend In Montreal is a friend indeed. Makes me wonder where Bergevin was especially if Montreal could have had him for same dollars as Aho?! This WAS the player for you. Montreal fans just imagine now Point on your team.

from the players perspective, Point didn't get what he should have... and he has to wait for it. He might regret not talking with Montreal.
