Bustin a move for Kapanen 2020

Created by: Kylonetic8

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 24, 2019
Published: Sep. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bustin a move for Kapanen 2020. This assumes that Samsonov develops in Hershey this year, if not, the Caps will need to sign a goalie in 2020.

This'll set up the Caps with a nice forward core in a few years with Vrana, Kapanen and Wilson and potentially Leason, Protas and McMichael.

I like Kapenen but don't really see the need in order to push Panik out who is going to surprise a lot of people this season. Would rather push Hagelin back. Panik-Eller-Kapanen would be an amazing 3rd line.

Lol yeah, this would be awesome but Caps would probably have to pay more for Kapanen, especially if he continues to progress offensively

Hagelin's advanced stats suggest he's a great defensive forward that still chips in with some offense, whereas Panik is more offensive based. Panik gives you more offense overall, but Hagelin gives you more defense. Depends on what you end up needing out of that third line with Kapanen if you did acquire him.

I'm more excited for the future if Kapanen is acquired. A line of Vrana-McMichael-Kapanen in a few years could be very good, with Leason-Protas-Wilson as the second line. Good god is that a gigantic second line, scary heavy, but still with some decent speed. That sounds like a pretty scary core of forwards that would all be pretty young still even in 3-5 years time, with Wilson being the most senior of them (and the Captain wink).

Come 2021, Oshie could be gone in the Seattle draft. Obviously just speculation, but if so, Panik is restored to the 3rd line, or Hagelin is. So Kapanen essentially replaces Oshie and the third line is the same as it will be this year.

Leafs fans have Kapanen pencilled in at 3R where he got 9 points in 38 games the year before last. If he keeps improving he might get 25 points at 3R in a full year, if Nylander and Marner stay healthy, and the left wings hold the left wing spots.

Some Caps fans have Djoos pencilled in at 1LD on opening night, since Kempny's been wearing non-contact jerseys all through camp. In Djoos' last 18 games, once he was fully recovered from his broken leg, he got 7 points on the third pair. That's a 33 point pace. If he plays with Carlson and things go well, he'll bring back more than Kapanen, next summer.

As long as Kapanen doesn't break out for like 35 goals and 70 points (which you never know), the value above seems pretty fair. I think Djoos is looking better again in the preseason action so far. Much more mobile and quick than last year, I mean let's face it, he was hurt and never fully recovered from that bad injury.

Well, this went out the window a little bit. My first thought was to wonder why they're giving up on such a promising defenseman. But then I read the list of guys available today.

Defenders younger than Djoos with lower cap hits include Forsling and Dahlstrom.

Forwards who might add some skill to this team's press box include Dano, Salomaki, and Sprong.

DeSmith is a slight upgrade over Copley, on a very similar contract, but Forsberg is also a possible backup who could come in with NHL experience already, and let the top prospects keep playing in Hershey.

https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2019/09/30/ho-sang-desmith-sprong-headline-waiver-wire/

Wonder if any make it all the way up the the Caps. Tough to predict how many they should try to claim, in order to end up with one or two. They're at 44 contracts, so not more than four. Given how much depth the Caps have in terms of defense prospects, they should probably try to pick three forwards and a defenseman, and be prepared to throw one or two back on waivers if somehow more than one claim goes through. There's basically no chance Sprong gets through, but nobody's talking about Dano or Salomaki and they're both pretty decent.
