Would Boston do this

Description
1 for 1, no sweetener.

Rask is hot garbage, but he’s cheaper this year and Boston can buy him out next summer for $1.33m over the next 4 years which gives them roster flexibility this year to add at the deadline and next year to handle any offseason needs. There is no hoping he bounces back, his best years in Carolina were after Eric Staal left and before Aho took off, so he played top 6 minutes and still only scored 40ish points. He won’t get that in Boston, so he’d be a $4m press box regular or AHLer.

The deals works for Minnesota because they can take on Backes this year and next without much issue with his deal ending a year earlier than Rask. They’ll have around $7m to extend Kunin and Greenway, considering Kaprizov is supposed to finally sign his ELC when his KHL deal ends in April.

I’ve proposed this a couple times. I love the idea and think it’s perfect for both sides

Probably not. Backes had 7 goals and 13 assists as a 3rd/4th line RW while Rask only had 3 goals (as a 4th line C), I expected more even if he played in only 49 games.

They're both sitting in the press box most likely, so it's pretty much purely a salary deal. Minnesota gets a good locker room guy I guess, but I don't think their points really matter. Boston buries Rask and uses the $3m they saved over Backes to go out and get a better player on an expiring deal for that cost and instantly improves.

I feel that Wild need a C more in Rask.
Not sure Backes cracks the roster based on last year.

Bad for MN. The Wild could just as easy bury him in the AHL as Bos could. Besides they have to pay Spurgeon his albatross of a contract next season, and find a replacement (or re-sign) for Koivu.
So of your $7m cap space:
-$4m to $5m to re-sign Greenway/Kunin (going off of JEE/Donato/Fiala deals)
-$3.75m to Kaprizov (ELC + bonus money)
-need to find a center to replace Koivu for about league min (or whatever the raise in the cap is).

Spurgeon's albatross of a deal? Ok.. lol Maybe as he gets older but it's fine next year.

If they bring Koivu back, someone will have to go especially if Kaprizov comes in. Same deal if they don't find an internal replacement for Koivu because who else do they sign? Backstrom? Caps aren't letting him go. Schenn will want more than the Wild could give even without Backes. There isn't enough roster space for everyone, so they'll have to finally trade a wing to create roster space and that will free up some money. I also didn't factor in the cap will likely go up a bit, so add that.

I love this deal. The Wild don't need any more C... I'd rather call up Sturm or Anas than play Rask in any capacity.
