I thought Connor would go first for sure. I really don't love this deal, but at least it's done. Point and Tkachuk had superior seasons last year.

Laine betting on himself as he still put up 30G in a down year. If he gets back over 40G and 70P he will get much more sooner than the other guys that signed the off season. A bit surprised he didn't go for the three years with a massive QO that a lot of the other RFA's did though as that's the season expansion and the TV deal will open up a fair bit of cap space.

I still like the deal for Winnipeg as well as they have a guy who averaged around 37G and 64P per 82 signed to a very fair cap hit for the next couple years. If this is where he stays then can secure him long term for less than it would've cost this year

Deal seems fair since it seems in the middle of what his on ice value could be. I feel like Laine has to be one of the most volatile players to give a value too. He drives almost his entire value from his ability to score at higher percentages from any area than the average NHLer with a lethal wrist shot. I know that sounds like a lot of goal scorers, but I don't know if there is another player that is so elite at a stat like that, who doesn't also drive play, create more high danger chances, elevate his teammates. Laine seems like a pretty average hockey player at every facet of the game that isn't shooting, it's a strange thing to see.

This isn't to say he is bad without his shot, just not a superstar, which means anytime he is gone a little cold, you are paying star money for a guy basically providing similar value to a middle six winger.

Happy with the AAV. 2 years is a good deal for both sides.

There's a lot of comments on Reddit/Twitter right now being like "Jets are screwed in 2 years if he scores 45-50 twice" as if the team will be mad they have to pay a 50 goal scorer tears of joy

all i see on reddit some flyers fan having a brain aneurysm about marner.

but people are typically reactionary and expect every rfa to sign a long team friendly deal

I don't know about Jets' fanboi part but isn't Laine's 2nd year salary better for the team than Point's 3rd year salary?

In two years:
- Buff's contract is up if he comes back (7.6)
- Both Kulikov (4.33) and Perreault (4.125) are gone
- The cap will have gone up and the new US TV deal will have kicked in
- The Seattle cap bump is right around the corner.

The Jets won't have any of their core left to sign. Copp/Lowry/Pionk/Poolman will be up but it's unlikely that any of them will be signing for mega $$$. Same with Roslovic and Niku next year

then why didnt montreal offer at least Aho's contract:

8.454 over 5 years with 91% signing bonus... to make it easier for Tampa / Toronto fans n such: 8 mil 5 years = 40 x 90 % sign bonus... Point takes home 36 mil n it costs Montreal value of 8 mil offer, get my drift? at 15% escrow, Point takes home 39.4.... how much is Point's signing bonus, now do his actual contract using 15% escrow on base salary.

MTL offer sheet (front-loaded signing bonus) was meant to squeeze CAR ownership to pay Aho in cold, hard cash. So from a structure standpoint, it's not comparable.

As for Laine, I agree that he's gonna arbitrate very hard in 2 years (or get traded before then). He's just gotta produce 1 solid campaign to earn a $9M AAV -- and $ is his #1 motivator. Clearly it's not his defensive skills.

Yay, finally.
See people, they don't have to trade him, he didn't take any offersheets, everything is fine. They can just sign Connor now and get started with the season. Then hopefully Buff comes back too.

I like this deal. Perfect! Laine > Marner (in my opinion) and he’s getting paid much less. Good deal.

I mean I called that contract months ago (with many jets fans) and was bashed since it was apparently too little. I’m not trying to brag but my point is opinion is opinion not facts and bashing someone’s opinions may make you feel good but will never get you anywhere in life.

Laine (better goal scorer than*) > Marner. Marner (everything else) > Laine.

ok, but if Carolina doesn't match Montreal has Aho. What I'm saying was not even paying (and in Point's corner - y ain't he asking, seeing the disaster contract he's stuck with n behind = 2 x 9.5 mil, 8.5, 7.88, n now 2 x 6.75) Aho's amount 8 mil x 5 yrs at 90% sign bonus gets Montreal has it's 1st line center? lol.

Decent bridge. I know everyone is crapping on him lately but he could easily be a 40-50 goal scorer next year. Even if he is 1 dimensional, I'd pay 6.75M for that any day.

I never understand why a team is screwed if they have too many good playersshakes head If you have too many good players on fair contracts, you can trade a player or two to get cap compliant. Teams are screwed if they are medicore or poor team and are right at the cap. Can't trade there way to cap compliancy and no cap to sign UFAs.
