Was this a good signing?

Anything less than Marner's is acceptable. I'm a little surprised that it's 6 years with that money, was expecting 7. Good job by his agent.

This is actually a gross oversimplification. Players get taxed based on where they play each game. Your calculations are assuming they play all 82 games in the province/state their team resides in. So yes while Marner is taxed at 52% when he plays home games and against Ottawa, he is also taxes much less when playing his remaining 37-38 away games outside of Ontario much like Rantanen will be taxed more when playing games outside of Colorado.

They also might get traded to higher/lower taxation state/province so I think it's useless to talk about this.

Seems like Sakic, Brisebois, Cheveldayoff, Treliving and Benning werent informed about "New Era" thats going on in NHL, where you pay millions more to young stars on a short Term, cause you dont want their "albatross" contract demands when they are 27y old and already in decline ( as the official narative in TML fanbase goes )........

Agree with "RFA" statement, though Benning with his Ericsson, Beagle and Myers signing certainly wanted albatross contracts for plus 30 players.

A bit high for only a 6 year term (a little more than this AAV should have bought the full 8), but I suppose he did just have an outstanding playoffs. Also surprised it seems there's 0% from bonuses. Overall if he keeps up his pace from the last couple years and goes beast mode in the playoffs consistently the team will be happy to pay him $9.25M AAV and I think the player did well to keep the term down a bit to allow him to sign one more massive deal with term at age 28.

This is a useless comment. The numbers don't lie that Rantanen is pretty obviously carried by MacKinnon.

Solid. I thought it would be a little bit higher tbh. Even taking into consideration taxes diff, etc etc its lower than the equivalent of Marner's.

Was expecting 10M before other RFA's signed, then I dropped my opinion to 9.5M when he was the only guy remaining. Its a lot of money still but there was ample argument it could be a little higher.

Either way, I don't think anyone in the league would not be willing to pay Rantanen 9.25M had he been a UFA right now. He's been really good the past two years.

How do you know the numbers don't tell you that MacKinnon is carried by Rantanen?
