If these acquisitions were such a good idea, why didn't we do them for free and then get something else for the other assets we're sending? Surely we could get a fourth for Benning from one of the four or five teams strapped for actual NHL-experienced RD's and a seventh for Cave?

And why in the world would we send Chiasson down when we could exile Gagner?

because chiasson isnt very good??

you trade contract for contract to maintain flexibility... cave is not going to be a contributer on this team but hosang could be, he was really effective last year in very limited mins

Because the Oilers have limited ability to take on more contracts (already have 48 of 50), Holland needs to move out players under contract before considering a waiver claim.

If Bear proves capable of having success with Klefbom during regular season games, and Persson comes back from injury and continues to improve, it's possible Benning may be traded this season. He's a right shot, proven, depth defender with some offensive potential and an affordable and expiring contract. That probably gives him more value than a 4th round pick. Cave should get more than a 7th as well, and may be expendable if Haas can acclimate and succeed.

I agree that Chiasson is a better asset than Gagne. Besides, sending Gagner to Bakersfield is an example of good cap space management.

Agreed. I think he's worth a mid- to late-2nd in the 2020 draft. He may be available for that at the deadline if Bear and Persson do as well as we hope.
