He isn't bad. He's an average NHL backup.

Let's try to be a little less Troll-y. Or at least try a little harder with the trolling.

I am a bit surprised by this, but it does seem like this is the writing on the wall for Holtby. Holtby, meet your replacement who will be breathing down your neck the entire season, Samsonov.

I'm all on the Ilya Samsonov train but this might be a bit premature. Even though he was much much better in the second half his AHL numbers are pedestrian at best. I think they should start him in the A and bring him up a month or two into the season. Tampa did the same thing in 2014 with Vasy, sent him to Syracuse for the first month or so and kept Bishop and Nabokov on the roster and then when the time came they called him up and waived Nabokov.

This is more of a cap move than anything. Stephenson won a spot on the team in camp when most people who follow the Caps were thinking he was a shoo-in to be sent through waivers. That made Copley the next man out.

I think if cap reasons meant rushing a stud prospect into the NHL too soon then they should have never signed Panik or Hathaway. He may be fine like Carter Hart was last year but idk im somewhat skeptical at this point.

Keep in mind that Samsonov played with professionals in the KHL. He needed to adjust to NA ice. The Caps need to see what they have in Samsonov with Holtby's contract expiring.

Yes I agree, but I was saying that personally I think the best route for them to take with him is to start him the A and hope he catches fire to start the season, they could then call him up probably sometime in November and ride with him and Holtby the rest of the way.

Meh, he already played in the AHL last season. He played great the second half of the season (his season stats won't show the strides he made). Might as well get a look at him now. If the Caps can't extend Holtby (which I'd doubt they can/should anyways), you need to know what you have in Samsonov at the NHL level.

He won 67% of his starts. That’s very good. That’s 27 wins i. 41 starts 54 points. In a 82 games season assuming that number is consistent caps would get 108 points. Seems above average to me

Winning is a team stat. That's like basing your idea of a pitcher in baseball off of wins and losses.

Copley is pretty much exactly average. Of 71 goalies who played >=500 mins, Copley was:

-48th in SV%
-40th in GAA
-45th in Goals Saved Above Average (-4.06)

Also, his GA% was 106. League average is 100. Dude is okay, but he's not anything more than an average NHL goalie.

I mean every single stat in hockey is basically a team stat. And winning seems to be the most important. At the end of the day I’m happier with a 7-6 w than a 1-0 loss. Hey pitchers in baseball get paid big money for having more wins than the do a lower ERA. Like hockey if you have a solid team that can put you in positions to succeed it make a everyone better.

Not saying he’s elite but 67% of the time he wins is pretty impressive. He’s doing something right or he’s at least not losing games for his team

Yeah, I agree with most of what you're saying here, but at the end of the day only 4 of his 16 wins were against playoff teams. His cap hit made him disposable. I'm more than comfortable having him in net, but I still think he's firmly an average NHL goalie.

That being said he also played most of his starts on the 2nd night of a back 2 back. The team isn’t always the most energized but I agree he’s getting older and he made the most sense to waive.

He's definitely not old, the Caps just simply couldn't get rid of Stephenson after the camp he had. He honestly played like a top 6 forward the last pre-season game against the Canes, and that game felt and looked like a playoff game. So he basically was fighting for his life as a Cap in that game, and he won.

And I'm one of the folks that thought he was a no brainer waiver.

Let's wait and see. Panik and Hathaway, on paper, look like a Kelly Miller and an Alan May. I think the Caps are better with them, even if they don't have the same skill as Connolly and Burakovsky, because they can contribute a lot more in the checking line minutes and penalty killing minutes available.

If Copley clears waivers today, he can still move back up to be the backup in time for the playoffs, if necessary. Samsonov and Vanecek get to come up and try out in the NHL this year, and get some experience. Each is going to make the NHL eventually, full time, so they might as well get their feet wet. All summer people said Copley would be waived for cap space, and I thought it was a bad idea because obviously teams would claim him. But yesterday the Penguins assigned DeSmith to Wilkes-Barre, and DeSmith is a little bit better than Copley at every goalie stat in the book, at the same age and basically the same contract. Giving Copley away for nothing would be silly, but that's not what's happening. He's just moving off the NHL roster for a little bit so everybody else gets a turn.
