There's always a part of uncertainty when it's about goaltender performances.

I'd prefer giving him a contract at half season or at the end of it because he could have a tough year

Nice numbers last year, and respectable career numbers. A nice payday for him, and a decent contract for AZ if he keeps it up.

I think some people are overreacting a little ... maybe a bit too much but he was amazing last season.

personally, I think it's fine. it's a bit hypocritical of fans to expect goaltenders to accept lower money than skaters when goaltending is a very key part of how well teams do. sure, goaltending can be incredibly variable, but the Coyotes also employ a pretty good set of goaltending coaches, so, clearly, they like what they see from Kuemper. there's obviously some risk involved, but I don't really think any of their available prospects are really ready to make the jump in the near future, and the Coyotes look like they want to contend now, so retaining Kuemper for a couple of years past this one is a smart move, rather than letting him go to FA.

Didn't really establish himself as a starter until last season, but he has had good numbers as a backup. Not a bad deal for the Yotes in that they have platoon starting goalies each to a decent price (along with Raanta) for a couple seasons. I just think they paid a bit too much as Kuemper's deal is richer than Binnington's who just dragged his team into the playoffs with an amazing half regular season and was really good throughout the playoffs.

This makes no sense Kuemper literally was one of the only reasons why the Coyotes were even sniffing playoffs last season

Raanta two years ago had a .928 Kuemper had a .925 last year and have both had good seasons prior one of the best goalie tandems in the league

Little high on cap hit, but that's what it was going to take to sign him to a short term deal like this. Kuemper has starter level skills, and it's smart for Arizona to do this, since they don't seem to have much in the minors to replace him. It gives them a starter quality goaltender for the next three years.

I would dispute that latter point. Kuemper and Binnington are paid about the same; they both had the same number of votes in Vezina voting; tbh, Kuemper had an arguably better back half of the season from January onwards. I don't think paying an extra $100K per season is "[paying] a bit too much."

I doubt that. Comrie hasn't proven much at the NHL level, compared to Raanta or Kuemper. Comrie appears to be more of an insurance option for Raanta's nagging minor injuries at the moment.
