If not Tavares, then who?
Personally, I thought this was an obvious choice, even before the Matthews incident in AZ this summer. Tavares embodies all the qualities that any team would be lucky to have. He's a true pro, a great player, and an excellent leader both on and off the ice. Nowhere does it say that the captain should be the best player on the team (assuming Matthews is, in fact, the Leafs best player).
Look around the league and see how many team captains are actually their team's best player. In fact, only a handful of teams have their best player as captain. I never understood the hype around Matthews as captain. I'd definitely choose Morgan Rielly over him and maybe even Mitch Marner.
