I am hoping that Holl shows well. He's never looked bad when I've seen him play. Nothing special but certainly fine for a bottom pair.

He could use a stretch of games to get comfortable. Can't be easy playing once in a while in that league.

I wonder how long the Sandin experiment will last. 10 minutes a night isn't going to help the kid.

This is the exact reason why @Trickster and I thought it would be better to have him play big minutes with the Marlies.
With him not getting much time at all...ya gotta wonder what that may mean for his development.

I hope so too. I think he looked a bit better than Marincin in pre season.

I think Babs will feel things out. Combination of two factors.

1. Can Sandin earn more ice time as both he and Babs get more comfortable.

2. Do Marincin and Holl show well enough to be the bottom pair.

Hes filling for Dermott....i actually thought he will rotate Sandin and Liljegren for 9 with Marincin and Holl till Dermott comes back.....

A head coach in Babcocks situation doesn't care about a players development so he's gonna dress/utilize the players that he thinks gives him the best chance to win and with an old school coach like Babcock that'll usually mean less time for younger players even if they're the better option then some old plug.

Actually that is incorrect. Most coaches including Babs as he has already stated. Player development is key. But if he is ready than he’s ready.

I agree with your point, however, he's most likely just getting a couple of games then going down to the Maries... so I'm sure it won't stunt his development, more like give him a taste of the NHL so when he does get sent down he's more motivated to get back up and has a better understanding of what it takes to play in the NHL. I would argue it could actually be better for his development.

I bet his ice time steadily rises. The fact that TO had 3 PP in a row in the first period took about 2-3 minutes out of his icetime. My guess he'll play 13+ tonight and possibly more tomorrow.

Or start him small and slowly give him more and more responsibility. Like Dermott got when he came up 2 seasons ago. I don't buy into the rhetoric that playing 22 mins a night against AHLers is better for his development than sheltering him as he gets more comfortable playing in the big league. It didn't hurt Rielly's development and he is, you know, the best defenceman on the Leafs.

Not as good on the PK as Marincin but better elsewhere. I really like his skating for a big man, like when Kotkaniemi tried going wide and Holl kept pace and pasted him. That takes some pretty good skating to do.

Or he's just too good to send down. I know you are actively hoping certain players don't show well so we can get some sort of deal on them but with how good this squad is this season that could be the dumbest idea ever. If Sandin is the 4th best defenceman on the squad (Which I believe he is currently and 5th best once Dermott is back) why on earth would be send him down and effectively make the team's chances of winning the cup worse. Only to appease the old school fan base that thinks you need to be 23 to enter the league.

Sandin very well could force Ceci out the door in short order. Best case scenario for the Leafs this season, Ceci plays pretty good and builds some value and gets traded for whatever, while Sandin is just better and forces more ice time for himself. I was sure Sandin was going to be a full season in the AHL away from being on the team but I don't believe that anymore. He's so smooth and so smart and already has NHL level vision, skating and instincts. Bordering on future elite level. Put his ice time and trajectory in his hands and see what he does.

He played under 10 minutes against NHL lottery team.
Mayne his minutes go up a little? But that's it.

How many minutes does the average 3rd pair D play?

Depends on the team and what roll he has on the team. In a game with little to no PP time and his minutes will go up a lot. I bet he'll eventually get some PK time which will see his minutes increase. This will likely be a season low, due to 3 straight penalties, he didn't see the ice until 9 minutes in. I bet his ice time will be 17 minutes a game by the end of the month. As I have mentioned several times, he is already looking better than Ceci, give him less minutes and give Sandin some time with Rielly. Especially if they need a goal.

I do want to be clear though, if he struggles, then obviously send him down. But until its clear he isn't ready, I say play him and challenge him with more ice time and responsibility so he can grow against NHL players.
