How Conor Sheary May Do This Season

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2019-20 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 4, 2019
Published: Oct. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As a Pens fan, I recall Conor Sheary being one of the most hated players when he played on the team. Supporters would always bash him because he missed too many scoring chances and kept slipping and falling whenever he stepped onto the ice.

Last season, he scored only 14 goals playing most of the season on a line with Vladimir Sobokta and occasionally Evan Rodrigues.

This year he is likely a third line player. We know he can be streaky. On an improved offensive team from the year before, could he hit 20 goals?

He might injure himself from slipping and falling every time he steps onto the ice.

I think he can. I would think he has a bounce back season.

Only if he can play against the Penguins 81 more times. Maybe the GM's could pass him around league so he gets to play against his old team more often.

Two years ago there were many posts of him being traded to Buffalo for a 2nd or McCabe. Since my time is limited i only watched Sabre games and he never made a huge impression on me when the Sabres played the PEN's, so I thought those returns were a bit exaggerated. When he finally came Buffalo for a 4th, I still was a little concerned because he only had 30 pts and mused why he did not have more assists playing with Crosby.
Now that I get to watch him every game, I do not remember him falling down every time he stepped on the ice but I am very impressed with his speed, shot, energy and willingness to fight for the puck.
Playing 3rd line minutes with Jimmy and Casey I think he will get between 15 and 20 goals.
Let me add, Vesey and Sheary are playing for contracts and are both UFA (so is Mittelstadt, but he is only an RFA), so we may see career years out of each of them.
That is why I just do not know where the Sabres will finish this year. They are better, but so are the Rangers, Leafs, Devils, and others. But with so many free agents all playing for contracts, it is very difficult to handicap. Last night, half way through the first period, I told my GF that they are playing as a playoff team. Can they do that every night?
But that is a subject for a different post. To reiterate 15 to 20 goals is my best guess.

If you look at their talent on paper, they definitely should be contending for the playoffs, but they might just miss it. Sheary is good on the forecheck and driving possession, but he missed quite a lot of chances. 20 goals from a third liner is pretty decent honestly.

We should have a discussion sometime about the sabres being a playoff team, I think they have a chance

If Sheary-Mittelstadt-Vesey stay a line for the reason I’d say 20-25 max, Mittelstadt is mostly a playmaker and will just feed him and Vesey nice opportunities
