It's that extra year 3 years of Ericsson compared to 2 years of Alzner that makes the trade so undesirable for Montreal. Besides, Alzner despite his demotion has been a positive player for his teammates in Laval.

Alzner's contract is a lot eaiser to buyout should Montreal take that option, compared to Loui's which is mostly signing bonuses. Also, Montreal isn't in a postion where cap space is a major concern, so it would be more suitable for keep Alzner buried.
