Description
These are lines run at practice today. It's clear that Hughes needs some power on his line, so I like that a lot, but having Hayden in over Boqvist is so silly.

Severson has been awful, but he has never been better than when he was paired with Greene last season. Glad to see that.

Why is Hughes demoted to the 3rd line after 2 games?

Maybe having Rooney and Hayden in there at practice is to wake Zacha and Boqvist up?

What's your opinion of Vatanen's trade value right now in draft picks? Or if a draft pick and a prospect, what sort of prospect is New Jersey looking for?

Hughes has been the third line in each game.

I actually think that (provided Hall and Gusev develop chemistry and Goose can play the right side (which is obviously not what he is accustomed to), these pairs of Wings is actually close to what I'd hope to see kept together, potentially with some Center swapping:
Zacha in that 2C with Bratt and Palms would be interesting to see how that worked
Zajac in at 4C with Wood and Hayden could be an effective checking line, as well.

I am not saying these lines are perfect, but based on the guys playing to their strengths, it gives some defensive reliability throughout the lineup with some scoring threats up and down the lineup as well

Hughes should be paired with Bratt/Boqvist and Palms. No reason to keep him on the 3rd line with guys who cant keep up with him skating wise after two games. If Hynes keeps this up he wont be behind the bench come the new year,

Boqvist looked good from what i saw (very limited view btw). Hugehs did not look good from what I did see, lot of running around w/o the puck.

He's been with Bratt and it's been awful. He looks lost, and he's a defensively liability. In Buffalo, he was being overpowered and pushed around. Coleman is a great two way forward and is the hardest working player on any given night. Simmonds is a big body who can park himself by the net and bury any chances that Hughes creates for him. This is a good way to protect Hughes.

Eventually, I believe you are right. However, in this situation, you are putting very offensive minded players on a line together, and instantly making them a target for other teams to put their own offensive lines against them to pin them in their own zone. There needs to be some better defensive linemates to play with Hughes as well as for Bratt/Boqvist to create some sense of balance and mentorship in the defensive zone. The goal is to hopefully get these kids to improve in that area and then be able to play together, and become true threats in that department. (This is true for Gusev, as well. His play in his own zone needs to bump up a bit, just like Hughes, Boqvist, and to a lesser extent, Bratt

Hynes isn't going anywhere.
Hughes is great offensively, but needs a lot of help on defense (Coleman) and physical protection (Simmonds). Doesn't really matter if he is the #2 or #3. He will learn and be a solid #2 by the end of the year. We have a lot of younger guys that need to learn how to play both sides of the puck. Mixing the lines up will cover their inexperience until they improve. I do think Boqvist should be one the ice instead of Rooney, and I think he will in a very short time. I would like to see Gusev and Bratt swapped, but that is just me.
