Why did we move Namestnikov? His contract is up after the year and because of the contract we got DeAngelo signed to we don't need the cap space right now.

Trade works well for both teams:

Senators can showcase Vlad and give him bigger minutes that the Rangers couldn’t. This will boost his value and they can flip him at the deadline for 2020 picks

Rangers get needed cap space AND a roster spot to bring up Chytil or Kravstov ASAP. They take lesser value to make the trade happen now but getting the kids ice time is the most important thing

The benefit of having $35M+ in cap space. OTT should have a nice stockpile of picks/prospects in the cupboard after this season. Maybe even a 1st overall...

Senators win but I mean why, Their not gonna make the playoffs and I mean Namestnikov is only good if he has good line mates. At best he scores 25 goals so I guess its worth the risk, but the 4th rounder could haunt them if hey draft like a Jamie Benn type.

They'll prop him up and flip him. I'd be shocked if he was on the Sens roster after the trade deadline.

Ottawa got better here but they're still not making the playoffs IMO.

There's a strong chance by the end of it they flip him for a 3rd or something, making the trade Ebert and a 4th for a 3rd.

Also if you are afraid of trading a 4th round pick because it might be the next Jamie Benn, you may as well never make a trade ever. The reason it's so noteworthy that he was a 4th round pick is because of how rare it is to find players that good so late in the draft. If a 4th-7th round pick plays any games in the NHL that's considered a win

They could have added three Vlad Namestnikovs and it wouldn't affect their playoff odds. Play offs were never in the conversation. It's all about what they can flip him for in a few months.

And what are the odds of drafting a Benn type? Slim to none?

Smart move by the Senators. Namestnikov is a solid middle six player that's versatile enough to play all three forward positions. He's exactly the player a rebuilding team can use to showcase and flip for increased value near the deadline while their prospects play top line minutes in the minors. He's even young enough that they could keep him around to be a veteran presence in the lineup if he fits in well in Ottawa.

The Rangers open up a lineup spot for one of their NHL ready youngsters this season and have a chance to win the trade if they hit a home run with the fourth rounder. I'd say it looks like a win-win for both teams.

I feel like a lot of the people saying the Sens won this trade haven't watched Names play recently or think of him with the Lightning, with Stamkos and Kucherov as linemates...

Names has been consistently bad for the Rangers ever since they got him. Plugging him into the 2nd line of the Sens might get him a couple more points, but any GM would be a fool to ignore his recent history. If he goes to a contender, he'll be bottom 6 again and produce nothing, while being ok on the defensive side of the puck.

Honestly, I'm surprised the Rangers didn't have to give away an incentive pick to be rid of Names. For that reason alone, the Rangers won this trade.

Gives us some more flexibility cap wise for this season. Now we can give his roster spot to someone better and more deserving, rather than having to showcase Names, who was brutal so far (and demoted to the 4th line/bench in both games).

Rangers management has set playoffs as the goal for this season. Names was not making this team better.

Don't sleep on this Ebert kid. He's got some good offensive abilities from the back end. He could be getting some minutes this year in the NHL

9GP / 4G / 3A / 7Pts

Not a bad start to his year in Ottawa. Wonder why things didn't work with the Rangers.

He was always a good player. The full season he played with the Rangers, they simply didn't fit his play style. Can't expect a pure offensive player to strive in a pure defensive team.

I sometimes wish i was a team pro scout/Ast GM. I would literally make someone look so smart. Been clamoring for someone to take a chance on this kid for a while. It was basically a low risk, moderate reward type player.

thats a pretty low price to pay. they will probably retain more salary and flip him at the deadline for more than that

Well it was a low price to pay and they did flip him at the deadline. The only thing I got wrong was the return was slightly lower than they paid to get him

Rangers should have got more than an AHL filler and a 4th at the time.

Ottawa wins.

Curious as to why you say this because he was later traded for a 4th.

Taking a peek at what happens in the future would be cheating.

I'm evaluating this trade, as if I'm instantly reacting to it at the time it was made.

It's only fair to everybody that left a comment smile
