Thats real bad from an OTT perspective. Rask and a 1st (bad contract) for a third makes more sense. OTT needs to move a centre to make room for some young guys as well not add more

Rask and a first for a third makes no sense from Minnesota's perspective. Minnesota is moving Rask more out of convenience than necessity: they aren't under the same kind of cap pressure as Toronto, Pittsburgh and Dallas. If you don't want another first, fine. I know Melnyk is cheap, but that's carrying it too far.

A rebuilding team still needs prospects to develop into talent. Batherson is looking promising. Why give that up to pay 4 million to a roster burden and draft a mid rounder 1st that could possibly be less of a hit than Batherson?

Yes, I agree, if your assessment of Batherson is that he has top-6 potential tending towards likelihood, then this would be a questionable idea. But since the expectation is that a mid-round first is a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman, then if Batherson is only a bottom 6 forward, this trade makes sense. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

At least make it a 2020 1st. And don't send any picks out.

You already have two 2020 firsts. This gives you two 2021 firsts. Spread the risk.

Yeah it really is all up to chance. I do think Batherson could be a top 6 guy. That being said, Rask could miraculously return to his old 40 pt form and the mid rounder they draft could be a 50 pt Dman while Batherson gets 30pts/season. If that's what happens then let's do this because Screw Minnesota and Screw Flanders.

Nah, get the pick sooner, develop into a player sooner. Besides, it'll be easier to project MN's pick this year as we don't know what their roster will look like next.

It's the principle of both the investment and the insurance industries. But maybe I shouldn't have used in in a post about Victor Rask.

No it works with Rask. It sounds a lot less like it's about STDs in a financial context. Rask is an STD to any team he plays for now.

"A rebuilding team simply cannot have enough first-round picks."

That is true but isn't Minnesota rebuilding as well?

Yes. This is the back half of a two-trade strategy where Minnesota gets two 2020 first-round picks and therefore is in a position to trade away the 2021 pick. I was just testing the waters for the ancillary trade.
