Unless Dubas gets creative dont sign a 8 mil plus dman

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 11, 2019
Published: Oct. 11, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The cap is tight. Everyone trying to find a way to sign Barrie or Pietro without trading one of the big 4 up front are kidding themselves. Not only is it basically impossible to actually do it and get your RFAs signed (they all involve RFAs taking VERY low deals) but it'll be next to impossible to sign Andersen (if you so choose) and Rielly (he has to be signed) when they hit UFA in the next 3 years

Status quo. The results will be the same as they’ve been for a while now.

Id argue that we should probably sign Tanev for Rielly pairing as defensive specialist. Rielly is similar to Gio. So Brodie would work with Morgan. But Id prefer L-R pairings. Dermott-Shatty would work nicely I doubt it will be Shatty below 3-4 per. Id say sign Vatanen to like 2x4.5 deal and see what he has to offer. Each pairing can play 20 minutes a night more or less.

Rielly-Tanev
Dermott-Vatanen
Sandin-Liljegren

Biggest issue here is the defense is full of offensive defencemens

Thank you.

I suspect if the season goes well somewhere between 7 and 9 mil for 7-8 years.

I think the UFAs will get paid this year. I think all free agents are going to be sorely upset if the cap doesn't go up a lot in 2 years as I think contract inflation over the last two years has been way higher than cap inflation and teams are going to run out of cap. That American tv deal needs to increase the cap by like 5-7 million in addition to a typical 3 ish million annual increase. The team's need the 10 mil in cap room.

Leafs need a guy like Weber! Big defensive Dman with Captain qualities. Maybe they can sneak Big Buff out of early retirement wink just my opinion!

I figured Brodie would work because of Gio to Rielly. Like you said.

I don't think tanev is worth the time because he can't stay healthy. If he could he would be ideal.

I think shatty stays reasonable given he is getting paid from his buyout. I may be wrong.

The logic is the same on the two rosters

I can see them signing Chris Tanev in UFA market in summer. Defensive machine, and if they can figure out his health, that would be hell of a Dman for Leafs.

It hasn't really been "a while"

It was one surprise year against Washington. Than two years against Boston with the first without Tavares. It's been two years really. But we have signed up for this team. If one of the big boys isn't traded from up front (im still the weirdo who would trade marner) this I think is the best route.

It's a good team that puts itself in the contenders situation.

You're not wrong in a sense. I kind of just chose two mid tier dmen on the market. You could aim for like DeMelo instead of Shattenkirk for the second pair

Justin Braun, TVR, Edmundson, Muzzin (re-sign) are good options.

Something like this:
Rielly-Dermott
Edmundson-Liljgren
Sandin-Braun/TVR

Isnt tanev Injury Prone? Also you dont think Vanc would try to resign?

Edmundson could make sense

I think Muzzin is going to get too much (he likely deserves it), but the Leafs aren't in a position to pay him what he'll want. If he was an Rd different story.

TVR and Braun are decent options if they'll sign under 2.5. DeMelo too

I wouldn't sign tanev for that exact reason. I don't know if he's ever played over 65 games.

It's been a long time. It's been a long time since the leafs had a strong defensive team, and that's coincided with a long streak of not winning a playoff round. Nylander should have been traded off his ELC, but that ship has sailed. If none of the big guns are traded, I agree that short term UFA d men at small money is the way to go, but Shattenkirk? You really want another guy that can play on the powerplay but is horrific in his own end? Go get a shot blocker, a penalty killer, a good 5 on 5 guy. Poach Kevan Miller from the Bruins. He's had injury issues but when he's healthy he's a good strong defender, and he'll be cheap.

see what he's saying though? You're taking a team that scores a ton, but struggles defensively, and then signing guys that help them score but make them worse defensively.

Braun or TVR a 1 year 1.5-2 mill
Edmundson a 4 year 4 mill per

Thats why I said they would have to figure out his health. But if they do it would be perfect. I doubt Vanc would resign him. They have younger guys up and coming.

At this point I think Nylander is better than his perceived value. As I said I think Marner is the guy to trade, Matthews is the franchise C, Tavares has the NMC and is oldest (hardest to trade) and C, Nylander has the lowest contract and coming off an off year.

So that leaves Marner as the one to trade.

But in regards to Shatty? I just figured he may be available cheaper because he is also getting buyout money

Is it time to revisit the Muzzin trade? Wouldn't it be nice to have Tobias Bjornfot and Sean Durzi under contract for the next couple of years?

I don't think I'm being a result merchant here. All of the ramifications of that trade were obvious the day the trade was made.

wanna know why he's getting buyout money? Because he's a turnstile. Brutal.
