How does 2 middle 6 wingers and a 2nd get a borderline top 4 RHD on a great contract and an elite RHD prospect?

This proposed trade overrates kapanen and underrates wilde. Wilde has a very high ceiling and he should be NHL ready by next season.

Looks good to me. I also think Hamonic is the perfect partner for Rielly, however, if we can't sign him I'm liking the idea of going after Vatanen and Demelo more (which I give you full credit for as you were the one to change my mind) heck your ACGM has enough for Demelo if the Leafs wanted Wilde or Lily to have to force there way on to the roster, or to give us depth in case of injuries or to have a replacement after the expansion draft. Good job man

Probably gotta overpay him to come to Toronto. Everyone already knows he prefers the west...so what's one way of getting him to come to Toronto?

You probably guessed it.

Plus as Trickster said you overpay him in terms of cap hit but you get to keep his term down in case he does take a step back

I have backup plan of adding DeMelo if we cant get Mayfield.
1.5 million per for 5 years for DeMelo to play on 3rd pair.

What do you think it costs to get DeAngelo?
Is Kapanen, Bracco and a 2nd enough?

I think that's a good package for DeAngelo, and I'm on board for DeMelo especially at that price! I really like Wilde but I would probably lean more towards DeAngelo and DeMelo over Mayfield and DeMelo.

Perfect for Reilly? Reilly has been the worse Leaf Dman this season. I miss the good ol' days when Hainsey was Reilly's partner.

Anyone else get the feeling that the leafs could aquire 4 toppish pairing minute munching d men from other teams and still have defensive issues? Cause that's what we essentially did in bringing Muzzin, Barrie and Ceci to go along with Rielly..

I think our d problems come down to 2 things really

i) the brand of hockey the leafs play I.e. fast, skilled, trading chances etc, we could have a d core filled with previous Norris winners and still be outnumbered down low and with odd man rushes given our forwards penchant for blowing the zone (although, so far, I think we've looked alot better on that this year)

ii) guys getting used to playing with each other.. we've had a massive amount of roster and coaching changes from last year. I mean, just look at our d.. Mo is the only guy playing right now who has played for the leafs for more than half a season. It'll take a while for everything to gel.

I really hope that Dert is given reps with Rielly to see what's there before considering any kind of roster surgery or trade.

Rielly/Dert
Muzzin/Barrie
Sandin/Ceci

Holl

That has alot of potential, methinks.

How did Reilly become the new scapegoat? I miss the good ol' days when Gardiner held that title..

So far this season it seems like the scapegoat handle goes to Kap, Rielly, Andersen, Mitch, Spezza and/or maybe JT is in there, too.

Can't we just all agree that everything is always Babcock's fault?

It's not so much as Rielly being the scapegoat and more about some times just making a safe play instead of trying to make offensive plays 100% of the time. I read what you wrote in @BCAPP 's ACGM and liked every single thing you brought up.
I also think there's a time and place for offensive plays....and then other times you just make that safe play even though it's not fancy but it's gotta be made.

These are things that winning demands.

Huge overpay for Hamonic. 4.5 is already an overpay and the highest I can see him getting. Isles say no

Reilly hasn't looked good so far this year (not making him a scapegoat just pointing out what I've seen from him so far). If Babcock doesn't start making in game adjustments then I can see him getting fired throughout the season as opposed to after the season. When do you think he gets fired?

I was thinking of making a thread in the Leafs forum about the D after the 10th game to discuss what we've seen so far.

Hmmm...it's probably still too soon but I'm interested in opinions.

That's a pretty fair and solid assessment, onex. And I think we'll start to see those things happen more as the team starts to gel and once Hyman and Dert come back.

That's an interesting take on Rielly and some of the gaffes that he's made in decision making. I could be way off on this but at times I could swear I'm watching the team play two different systems...

When DJ was the defensive coach for the leafs he had the d throwing long bomb stretch passes and/or off the glass and out to relieve pressure. Hakstol seems to have the d making shorter outlet passes to supporting forwards who are responsible for getting down low to help the d.

The one D I see trying to stretch it out most is Mo. There's a good chance that as much as he might be missing Hainsey, he could also be struggling with adapting to a new defensive system given his familiarity with being a leaf. Who knows? Just spitballing.. but I'm not worried about Rielly at all. The guy is a stud. Worts and all.

Actually, I'm not too concerned about much right now. It's early. We've generally looked good beyond the Tampa blowout and a 3rd period collapse to Montreal on a back to back. Freddy is playing like he does in October. Players are getting used to new teammates, coaches and systems. We have a couple important guys on the shelf. Captain Underpants is doing Austin Matthews things (scoring goals). Willy is looking like the old Willy. And I haven't had to hear Darren Dreger and all the Paul's justify why Mitch Marner is worth 11M yr. Life is good smile

But we should fire Babcock. Just because.

Hmmm....10 games? Maybe we'll taking about being sellers at TDLnod, instead of trying to improve the defence. There is still time, but Zaitsev, Gardiner, and Hainsey were superior to their three current replacements, Ceci, Barrie and Holl. Dermot is better than the current edition of Sandin.

I can only see Babcock getting fired this year if we turn into an absolute tire fire. So, I don't really want to see him fired because I've watched that movie before.

That said, if the leafs dont make some noise in the playoffs then I think he's done. The expectations are high this year and Babcock's tactics and messaging could be wearing thin.
