After all that complaining we heard from you Calgary guys in June that Gaudreau is soft and disappears in the playoffs?

Somehow, teams always get an inkling about whether a traded free agent will re-sign with them, without ever seeming to cross the tampering rules . . . how else do you explain the instant Pacioretty and Faulk contracts?

I think the Flames would rather make an offer of possibly 2 1sts and prospects for Hall at the deadline, giving you a top 6 of Gaudreau-Monahan-Hall and Tkachuk-Backlund-Lindholm

Don't see CGY being able to afford that though...

I see what your saying.

My line of thinking is simple, age.
Gaudreau is playmaker, I'm keeping him.

What about Backlund + for Hall???

Yeah, I'm working on that (a 2020 roster) right now, and even if Brodie and Hamonic walk, it's hard to create a viable roster with Gaudreau's cap hit in there . . .

Not sure how, but Treliving’s famous line is “you find room for good players”, I mean the Leafs did it this summer and nobody thought they would

I don't see Jankowski filling the #2C slot that would open up if Backlund were traded. And Hall is only 21 months older than Gaudreau.

Well, the genesis of this trade was all the bitter criticism of Gaudreau's performance in the past two playoff series, so I was just toying with this idea . . . right now I've got a 2020-2021 roster without Gaudreau, Brodie and Hamonic and I've signed Hall for $11MM and Mark Pysyk (another Alberta boy) for $4.25MM and I have $4.25MM left for one bottom forward and one bottom-pairing defenseman. I've heard strong rumors that Hamonic will walk, especially if he can work out a deal with Winnipeg, but what's your take on Brodie? And do the Flames want him back? He would be easier to fit in than Gaudreau.

Don't think the Flames have the cap or pay or overpay Hall next season. Just keep the very cost efficient Gaudreau.

Actually, signing Hall at $11MM, Jankowski and Andersson at $2,5MM (the latter may be optimistic), Czarnik at $1.825MM and Mangiapane, Kylington and Gillies at $950k, and UFA Mark Pysyk at $4.25MM, I still have $4.25MM room to sign a 14th forward and #3 RD. So it could be done.

I am guilty of being too hard on Johnny at times, but looking back on the Colorado series with clear eyes, he wasn't that bad, it was his centre Monahan who wasn't very good. I get where your'e coming from though, lots of fans here are scared Gaudreau will head east when his deal is up, why not get ahead of it and move him for Hall and extend Hall right away.

I just ran a next years roster with a slight cap increase of 2 mill, I get that the cap may not go up that much, but I signed Hall at 11x7 and the numbers just barely worked
Some key moves
-Jankowski and Bennett traded, I expect Kylington to be traded to. If at the TDL maybe a Hall for a 1st, Jankowski, Kylington+ package
-Hamonic re-signs and Brodie walks, Hamonic really likes playing in Calgary, he is incredibly active in the community. I think he will take slightly less to stay.
-Andersson signs a 4x3 bridge, Mangiapane signs for 2x2
-Bottom end of the roster is filled out by Dube, Pelletier, Gawdin, Yelesin all cheap young players, Zagidulin fills the backup role.

It's not incredibly likely by any means but it would be so awesome for Flames fans haha

I just wanted to float this idea to get discussions going, inasmuch as Hall is from Calgary. My only emphatic input on the subject is that I think it would be much too risky to try some TDL deal for Hall because you might get only a few games plus playoffs from him -- similar to the Stars' Zuccarello debacle. If you're not going to wait for Hall to hit free agency, I think that the deal is better made sooner rather than later.

In my tentative scope of a 2020-2021 roster, I have Andersson at $2.5 for 3 years. You think he'll go for $4MM?

I think Andersson will likely get a nice contract, he’s probably the Flames 3rd best D IMO, behind Gio and Hamonic. That being said Treliving just played hardball with Tkachuk, if he needs too he will do the same with Andersson and your 2.5 could be a possibility

I hope not. I'm a labor guy. I'm always on the side of the players. Well, almost. I think that the Marner contract was an outrage.

I like your line of thinking here specifically for playoff success standpoint.
The problem with trading for Hall early in the season is ya gotta part with more pieces than ya want.

A TDL scenario allows a team to give up less just because a team only gets a quarter of the season out of this...and while conditions can be added for an extension, its just more doable in a TDL crunch.

Yes, my point is that you should either trade for him before Thanksgiving or else wait until he's a free agent. Trading for him at the TDL gets the worst of all worlds.

Major no on Gaudreau for Hall. Major yes on being players in a trade for Hall or trying to sign him as a UFA.
