Per Scott Cullen's article on The Athletic (Data used from EvolvingWild)

"Jack Hughes is an interesting case. The first overall pick in the 2019 Draft has no points in his first six NHL games, the longest drought for a first overall pick to start his career since Steven Stamkos in 2008. Hughes’ underlying numbers are still pretty strong. He is generating 7.58 shots on goal per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play, which is more than Connor McDavid, and Hughes’ .69 expected goals/60 is more than Taylor Hall, Steven Stamkos, and John Tavares. As they say, the waiting is the hardest part."

Well sometimes they never pan out. Could be waiting for years. I'm sure Stefan had some good advanced stats.

I wouldn't put the Devils in the same class as that horrid Atlanta team. The Devils aren't scoring and are allowing too many goals....a bad combo, at least right now.
Either way it's a tough jump from the NCAA to the NHL for an 18 year old, especially on poor team..
Taylor Hall....who so many will get a kings ransom at TDL....has ZERO goals and three assists in five games.

The expected goals stat would be especially impressive considering its down league wide this season as per below (ignore the fact that its mostly about Toronto)

Its cherry picking, but he does have a goal and 4 helpers in 6 games. I mean 5 pts in 6 games, tough to **** about. But I see your point.

NCAA -> NHL isnt a massive jump, NCAA you play against a bunch of really good specs and some 23-24 yr olds... Hughes never played in the NCAA, USHL only

Stamkos is a prime example of to never call a first overall pick a bust too soon, especially 6 games in or even after a full season for that matter. Stammer had a down year by first overall pick standards and with a strong second half still only finished with 23 goals and 46 points but then game back the next season with 51 goals 95 points and won the richard trophy en route to becoming one of the greatest players of his era. These kids take time and some arrive faster than others. It's not fair to Hughes to declare his whole career a bust based off of a poor week and a half statistically by his standards. Hughes is too skilled and too talented for a slump like this to last much longer and when he does break out of it which i'm extremely confident in saying that he will I can't wait to see the same people throwing him under the bus now praising him up

That being said for the sake of the thread I think it was Pierre Lebrun or someone who reported last week that one NHL gm had the top 3 of the draft ranked Kaako first , Dach second, and then Hughes third.

I like to look at a player like Aho, to start the season, he has 2 empty net goals in 6 games... no assists... the guy will get going eventually... eventually..

If he turns into a bust, you'll know who said it first. XD
I agree with you though and hope he turns into something. I am still a little mad about the Devils getting two 1st overalls in like a 3 year time.

And there were "NHL GM's" that had Eichel above McDavid during that draft. It's funny that around draft time everybody had Hughes as the top pick, but the first sign of turmoil reporters and GM's come out of the woodwork saying "I had so and so above him"

Well read the post I made just before this, i was merely stating a fact. If there's anyone pulling for Jack Hughes it's me.

As of almost 2 weeks into their rookie season Kakko has one goal and Hughes has zero. I think we can all safely say that NJ **** the bed on that one. No chance Hughes can possibly catch up over the course of their careers.

My issue with that quote is that he's played 6 games. Talk about small sample size...

Of course- but that's kind of the point, no? It's a double edged sword. We're commenting on a thread saying Hughes is the next Stefan after 6 games, so i'm providing evidence to the contrary off of that sample size.

Gotcha, yeah it'll be interesting to see how he pans out. I said this when he was drafted and I'll say it again now: I think he really could have used a year in the AHL or in the NCAA. I know everyone was raving about him in camp but it's extremely difficult for an 18 year old to come into this league, even one as talented as Hughes.

I genuinely believe if he were a winger as opposed a center people wouldn't be having that conversation. Patrick Kane was smaller then Hughes when he came into the league, and the hockey community as a whole agreed that they were comparable talents.

I've never seen Drouin play live- are Hughes and him play a similar style?

It's not that I think he's small, I just think he could have use a bit of a gateway into the tougher competition. Much like Matthews went to Europe for a year before he came over, or how Eichel played in the NCAA for a year. Doing that just helps you refine some of the issues with your game and better prepare you for the NHL. I can't comment on the Drouin and Hughes comparison, I haven't seen either player enough to know.
