if they give all this, Hall must come with an extension

Bless your soul for acknowledging the cost to acquire an elite talent, This is the type of price you would need to pay to outbid every other GM loading up at the TDL.

Giving up Caufield and Primeau is a mistake. Although if i'm New Jersey I would be dancing in the streets thinking about reuniting the Hughes x Caufield connection for the next 15 years.

You're right, it is a mistake. But so is giving up Hall for anything less

Habs don't even consider this. Primeau is too much of a loss.

I don't think NJ will be able to get this type of return....wayy too much. Erik Karlsson was probably the highest value traded player in recent history and although they got more assets than above, they were less valued assets overall.

I think people forget that NJ only holds a lot of negotiation power if Hall is hinting at being willing to resign with NJ. If he is leaning towards free agency, the return they'll be able to get is much less because they can't dangle that over anyones head and say "Well if we don't get what we want, we'll just keep him".

Look at what Mark Stone got from Vegas as a good example of expected return. Even if you add a little extra cuz you think Hall > Stone that still doesn't equal the above.

My gut tells me after the start NJ is having, he will test free agency.

No chance the habs do. You’d have to be a Cup contender, who is extremely overconfident in your team to do this.

Habs should only trade for Hall if they are confident that can extend him and they'd need to send a bigger contract back than Lehkonen's in order to make an extension work over the next few seasons. Replacing Caufield and Lehkonen with Drouin would be fairer and more sensible
