Turcotte for SuzukiDanaultand a 1st round pick

Created by: Billy739
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 16, 2019
Published: Oct. 17, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Turcotte-Caufield get to stay together and make the jump to the NHL together from the Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA .

MTL signs Spezza can also help take bulk faceoffs handling most of the Defensive Faceoffs Danault would have .

Turcotte , Kotkanemi, and Poehling take the top 3 lines knowing they'll have support from Wing with Drouin and Domi as well volume control support from Spezza.

i dont expect MTL to become a cup contender in 2020-21 but i believe it lays the foundation for a return to the playoffs while building towards a regular Cup Contending Team .

Line 1 = Balanced attack capable of playing shutdown role

Line 2 = Mixture of Grit , Size , Skill and Power .

Line 3 = Pure Skill and primarily made up of top Power Play Players.

Line 4 = Shutdown line capable of containing quality units while also providing potential for offensive output . 3/4 of your Penalty Kill unit is on 4th

There will be nights where 1/3 top lines **** the bed and when that happens Spezza's line will step up playing a more prominent shutdown role for that evening .

MTL
  1. Turcotte, Alex [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
LAK get Danault who's 9th in Faceoff wins in the NHL and 8th in Faceoffs taken . PD score's 90% of his points at even strength and is a top notch defensive player who thrives on the Penalty kill . (a very weak area for LAK)

LAK has an aging Core but they're still offensively gifted. They do however struggle to keep up with and shut down todays youth which is where Danault comes in .

Danault isnt the selling point the unprotected 1st and Nick Suzuki is but Danault does give LAK a replacement for Carter longterm while potentially helping boost Carter's stock as Danault makes everyone around him better as Gallagher and Domi keep saying .
LAK
  1. Danault, Phillip
  2. Suzuki, Nick
  3. 2021 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
if Danault doesnt re-sign LAK gets a 2nd in 2022 as well
2.
MTL
  1. Merkley, Nick [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Merkley requires waivers in 2020-21 and given his current development pace isnt likely to push his was past Kessel,Schmaltz,Fischer, Hinnistroza or Garland .

MTL RW is weaker as seen below having to bring up Caufield and Sign Simmonds to give us 4 regular RW's with no back up if injuries arize . Merkley could steal a job from Armia or sit as a 13th forward getting some NHL experience .

MTL wont be forced into a position where waiving him and losing him might be the only option . our RW outside Gallagher is wide open
ARI
  1. Byron, Paul ($1,000,000 retained)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (MTL)

MTL isn't getting better in any way with this trade... You're basically trading away a guy who's got the same pts potential than Turcotte, a underrated two-way center on a really nice contract as well as a first which might turn out to be a top 15 pick (Caufield was taken 15th overall just so you know). That is real bad for MTL. Even though LA isn't in a position to trade Turcotte, a trade thats more fair would be Suzuki and Brook or a second.

If I were the kings I would say no, Turcotte has the potential to be a superstar in the league. The kings aren’t going to be competitive for a couple years so I don’t think it makes sense to trade a top draft choice for players ready now, plus a draft pick.

Suzuki is not 100% ready yet. He plays but he could have been in the AHL in a lot of teams. Danault would fetch a 1st round pick at the TDL. So the trade is :

Turcotte
vs
Danault (trade him for a 1st and maybe a mid pick)
Suzuki who's one year away to be ready
1st pick

Am i missing something here?

That's funny, you spelled Bowen Byram using Alex Turcottes name................ Huh, weird.

Jokes aside, I still can't believe there are people who think the forwards are whats wrong on the Habs lineup.

Guys, Habs need better dmen, not forwards. Kulak, Mete, Chiarot, Fleury, Folin, Reilly are all supposed to be battling for 5-6-7 minutes, not anything higher. Weber and Petry are top 4 dmen only. Habs have too many guys playing too high in their defensive lineup.

How about we spend all that above on actual dmen prospects to play in the top pairing?

This is a wonderfully thought-provoking idea!

Best case scenario for the Kings:

Suzuki replaces Kopitar
Danault replaces Carter
The first becomes a top-4 defenseman in 2024-2025

Worst-case scenario:

Suzuki becomes a third-line center
The first becomes the next Jake Virtanen or Nick Ritchie
Turcotte becomes the next Elias Pettersson

The unaddressed snag in this proposal is that because the 2020 draft is in Montreal, the first-round pick has to be in 2021. I think that factor plus the inherent risk in having to have three things go right for "success" as opposed to one (Turcotte becoming a star) tips this one into the No category for the Kings. Plus, as @F50marco says, Montreal needs high-quality defensemen, not forwards.

But this idea is well worth a lot of analysis and discussion!!

sold

if we can Turn Galchenyuk into Domi , Domi into Turcotte
MTL finally gets their first top line Center All Star Potential prospect since Koivu

i'd rather give up age and keep youth
if giving up a 2nd line player and a middle 6 Center who can log top line minutes if needed then that's a Steal and MTL can avoid dealing with their contracts .

Turcotte's gonna be a top line player guaranteed
Suzki's a middle 6 center or a 2nd line RW with potential in time like Gally to take top RW

its a big upgrade so its worth paying a lot .

agreed on all but our defensive Need
our Defensive Prospects are Solid
what we need is a 23-24 year old LD to play stop gap on top LD
until Mete, Romanov , Struble , Norlinder or G.Olofsson step up and earn it .

Ideally we'd like Chiarot to fill that role like he has thus far as Chiarot -Petry lead all D pair in minutes every game this season .

i would however love to trade Mete in a package for a LD like Josh Muhara who was part of the WHL's most dominant Defensive pairings and PP Duo's with Cale Fleury. Get us Muhara-Fleury and our PP will be more then Just Petry and Weber on the blueline . I doubt ANA gives up Muhara though he's a mobile D and teams dont like parting with those .

i'd take a Travis Sanheim for the same reasons as Muhara but again teams arent trading them .
we need a guy like Bouwmeester for 2 years for example

you're comment's 6 months out of date .
we need 1 Quality LW Prospect right now

Mete
Romanov
Struble
Norlinder
Legurrier
and Leiskanien who's 4 points in 5 games in Laval 3 on PP

i dont see where Byram fits in
good player but i'd rather Romanov as players bounce off him
he's a guy who lays out Gravity Defying Clean Hits
he's a 3rd Generation Russian Legacy Player who lead a team that's never been close to a Gagarin Cup to their 1st his rookie year.

Byram's gonna be good in 1-2 years
Romanov's gonna be good as early as April. 12/2020
Struble's a Stud to and 1 year ahead on development projections as he opted out of BCHL to go to NCAA
Struble's basically Weber 2.0 playing the same style with a similar big build .

if Byram was ready this year sure
but he's gonna take some time and we need someone here in the next 6-12 months playing .

still think Suzuki's more valuable then Domi now ?
2 points behind Domi's production in his rookie year which is good enough for 4th in the rookie race behind only Olofsson ,Makar and Hughes

Huge NO from MTL

i'd still do it
Turcotte and Caufield are together in NCAA developing
they'll be together on Team USA developing with Poehling

Danaults a pending UFA in a year and 3 months
Suzuki's good but he'll never be Turcotte good (like comparing Marchand to Bergeron )
1st has value but its 2021 where there is only 2-3 players ready for the jump to the NHL and rest require 1-2 years minimum
like L'heaueux who's just 16 leading the QMJHL rookies a point per game and is a projected top 15 draft pick in 2021 before the season started and has only climbed.
He'll need 2 years minimum but is on the only team that spanks Lefreniere's team shutting him down everytime . The owner fired his coach and GM despite being 10th in all Canadian Junior he felt like he wasnt all in so he hired Dan Lacroix former MTL assistant Coach who lead the Wildcats with Coach Nolan to a Memorial Cup final losing by 1 goal . Since Lacroix came in the Wildcats acquired all 3 of the top 2016 QMJHL draft players in Mcisaac ,Fortier and Groulx making Moncton a dominate force that anyone who draft L'heaueux would want to develop him in as MIN has with Khovanov (only player outside Lafreniere with 2 points a game average in the QMJHL )

Granted the price is high but what do you think it would have cost to get a #5 OA pick ?
ARZ gave up D'angelo and the #6 OA for Stepan who at the time had a higher value then Danault currently does .
just because he's already drafted doesnt mean that value drops
