If the act is defined as a “single act” does that not mean it is an act that only happens a single time?

While it’s not impossible for a team in last place at the start of the new year to win the cup, statistics tell us that is exceedingly rare.

You're right makes it an oxymoron. I should've said no event happens just once. I also agree that it was exceedingly rare and probably won't happen again in my lifetime.
