This is a risky contract but after 2 years I feel like it will be worth it, defiently better than waiting 2-3 yrs for him to sign another extension at more money same time Hughes is signing a new deal.

He was drafted 1st overall two years ago and suddenly 7.25 is too steep of a contract.

Cant wait to come back to this thread in two years and laugh at the people saying its high

are we all forgetting about inflation, players ask for more and more each year and this is probably a steal when kevin hayes is signed for similar money.

Yakupov was also drafted 1oa....

I don’t think this is a good contract. Less money and a shorter term would be the best case. This still could turn out okay.

Hischier has 101 points in 157 games = .643 pts a game
Yak had 136 in 360 games = .377 pts a game

They arent even close to being comparable. Hischier also plays center, a position that is harder to play than winger making him alot more valuable at the same time

They are completely comparable as 1oa, that was my only point. I don’t even understand why you are bringing up stats.

7 years is a long enough contract that even if he doesn’t improve he will at least be worth the money in the final year.

The contract is certainly a gamble.

At least he's providing solid reasoning to back himself up. You're only logic is he's a #1 pick, so that guarantees he's going to be an elite player

What? Did you look at my previous post?
I was comparing how him and Yak have nearly a .300 point difference a game. Hischier is playing against top teams centers too.
I just look as Hischier the same as I looked at alot of the big RFAs.
7.25 for a guy who is going score 60-70 points a year, be a great two way center, shootout specialists and team leader is a steal for the Devils.

I think you need to re-read my post...

If a player is on a bad contract for 6 years and a fair contract for 1, I wouldn’t exactly call that a home run..,

Everyone tends to focus on offensive numbers. Nico is gonna be an exceptional 2-way Center. He's already far better defensively than Keller and he's a year younger. Nico plays every night against other team's top lines and D. I think this deal will save the team money, especially if Hall re-signs.

Nico is already better than Kevin Hayes in my opinion. And he's 20! Every contract carries risk! Why not bet on a 20 y.o. #1 pick who happens to be an excellent 2-way Center on a young, up and coming team?

Great job getting him locked up early, long term RFA deals benefit the team much more often than not.
His closest comparables are Monahan, RNH and MacKinnon, very good company in terms of value.
