He was drafted 1st overall two years ago and suddenly 7.25 is too steep of a contract.

Cant wait to come back to this thread in two years and laugh at the people saying its high

I can't wait till you do that so I can laugh at how much time you have on your hands.

Not really. Kuzy ppg and was the best player for that caps cup

My immediate response was that this was an overpay. How could Nico be worth the same as a few of the other RFA's from this past offseason. First thing to consider is that we will need to consider what that deal will look like under next years cap lens and not this years. The second point to consider is that with Hall being unrestricted after this season having one less contract to worry about at the same time will give the team a clearer outlook, not just with Hall, but also in 2 hears when Hughes will need to be re-upped. The third thought has to deal with the rising cap with both a new TV contract in the US and a bump from the Seattle team entering the league. Consdidering all of these together I think that barring a massive drop off in production or injury issues that this contract will have some serious value by year three making it a solid signing.

Looking at points alone, this contract may seem steep, but Nico Hischier is incredible at driving offense for his team. The points will come in time, and Devils fans will be thankful to have their number 1 centre locked up at 7mil.

I also think he will grow into a bigger role as a PK centre/ two way guy.

He did the year after he signed! The year Kuzzy signed he scored 59 points! 77 the year before though.

Hischier is at a way lower cap % though

ive seen this kid play a lot of games and hes not bad but not exactly s sure thing to turn into a point a game player. its a big risk. if he stays a 50 pt 20 goal guy. the fact that hed sign this kinda says a lot I think

You're right he did.

Hischier isn't my boy, not a NJD fan. But Hischier hits 70 points within the next 1-3 years guarenteed.

This deal is a sliver of the cap, great signing

Strength down the middle wins games. Hischier should be their 2C long term, and one of the best 2Cs once him and Hughes are in their primes. Locking up Hischier at this rate for the long haul makes the most sense, and I love the deal. It should be a good deal in a few years.

Which contract would you rather have: Evander Kane, Kevin Hayes, or Nico? All at similar value and similar point totals over the last 3 seasons. I think Kane has scored more than he's assisted, but still...Nico is 20 years old.

Wow! I gotta say I'm kinda surprised at this price tag. But he will be worth it for NJD.

talk about betting on his ceiling.

he is a good player but that is a lot to toss at him now

good contact for Nico, now take 50m and after 8 years if good results 70-80m. with bridge deal wont get that much.

Yakupov was also drafted 1oa....

I don’t think this is a good contract. Less money and a shorter term would be the best case. This still could turn out okay.

Hischier has 101 points in 157 games = .643 pts a game
Yak had 136 in 360 games = .377 pts a game

They arent even close to being comparable. Hischier also plays center, a position that is harder to play than winger making him alot more valuable at the same time

Hes not earned this type of money contract.
Good news, could let go claimed by Seattle if hes not worth it but why would they want him then?

risky hasnt proven anything high risk high reward

At least he's providing solid reasoning to back himself up. You're only logic is he's a #1 pick, so that guarantees he's going to be an elite player

Hischier has 101 points in 157 games = 0.643 points per a game
Yakupov had 136 points in 360 games = 0.377 points per a game

A more objective comparison = both players statistics up to the current point in Hischier's career (their D+1 and D+2 seasons plus 6 games):

Hischier = 102 points in 162 games = 0.629 points per game = 51 points per 82 games (and 19 goals per 82 games)
Yakupov = 57 points in 113 games = 0.504 points per game = 41 points per 82 games (and 21 goals per 82 games)

So at signing ... Hischier is only 10 points per 82 games ahead of Yakupov's production ... and 2 goals per 82 games behind Yak (Hischier is better defensively though).

Yukupov's point production (and overall game) ended up regressing with age.

I don't expect Hischier to regress ... but given that Yak wasn't even worth an NHL deal by age 24 ... there's definitely risk that Hischier won't be worth $7,250,000 x 7 years.

In conclusion:

- The two players are relatively comparable offensively.
- Hischier is a Center and is definitely better defensively.
- This contract definitely comes with a relatively big risk.
- With equal chance of reward (Hischier becomes an 80-90 point player).

Risky but definitely worth it.
Better than waiting and giving Nico all the power like the Leafs did with Nylander and Marner.

Could go two ways it'll either be a complete steal or it will be a slight over payment.

All in all I like the contract.

Risk-reward deal as he's been a 55 point / 82 game player across his first two seasons (albeit at 18 & 19 years old). There's a good chance this looks like a great deal on the back half but it's a bit steep for the first couple years. Overall I think it's a good signing by Shero as the potential reward of having a #1C quality player at < 9% of the cap outweighs the risk in slightly overpaying him as a #2C (55 points with two-way play) if he plateaus.

Great job getting him locked up early, long term RFA deals benefit the team much more often than not.
His closest comparables are Monahan, RNH and MacKinnon, very good company in terms of value.

idk about your comps, but i still agree! lol

RNH i can see, I actually prefer to look at larkin personally. Larkin has shown a little more offense, but I'd take nico defensively. Given inflation and the contracts signed since larkins and the term larkin got, I'd say this is pretty good for NJ
