talk about betting on his ceiling.
he is a good player but that is a lot to toss at him now

good contact for Nico, now take 50m and after 8 years if good results 70-80m. with bridge deal wont get that much.

Yakupov was also drafted 1oa....
I don’t think this is a good contract. Less money and a shorter term would be the best case. This still could turn out okay.

Hischier has 101 points in 157 games = .643 pts a game
Yak had 136 in 360 games = .377 pts a game
They arent even close to being comparable. Hischier also plays center, a position that is harder to play than winger making him alot more valuable at the same time

Hes not earned this type of money contract.
Good news, could let go claimed by Seattle if hes not worth it but why would they want him then?

At least he's providing solid reasoning to back himself up. You're only logic is he's a #1 pick, so that guarantees he's going to be an elite player

Hischier has 101 points in 157 games = 0.643 points per a game
Yakupov had 136 points in 360 games = 0.377 points per a game

A more objective comparison = both players statistics up to the current point in Hischier's career (their D+1 and D+2 seasons plus 6 games):
Hischier = 102 points in 162 games =
0.629 points per game =
51 points per 82 games (and
19 goals per 82 games)
Yakupov = 57 points in 113 games =
0.504 points per game =
41 points per 82 games (and
21 goals per 82 games)
So at signing ... Hischier is only 10 points per 82 games ahead of Yakupov's production ... and 2 goals per 82 games behind Yak (Hischier is better defensively though).
Yukupov's point production (and overall game) ended up regressing with age.
I don't expect Hischier to regress ... but given that Yak wasn't even worth an NHL deal by age 24 ... there's definitely risk that Hischier won't be worth $7,250,000 x 7 years.
In conclusion:
- The two players are relatively comparable offensively.
- Hischier is a Center and is definitely better defensively.
- This contract definitely comes with a relatively big risk.
- With equal chance of reward (Hischier becomes an 80-90 point player).
