Don't know how this makes the Leafs better this year. Losing three NHL regulars for Weber and an iffy NHL starter Poehling.

How is Poehling an "iffy NHL starter" He's 20 years old and shows great promise.

I mean lets be honest about this trade. He might be the best piece in it.
Nylander is ower paid. You pull him away from Matthews and that contract looks like a tire fire.
Ceci and Petan are cap dumps.
Kapanen is ok, but nothing to write home about. His go to move of skating fast down the center of the ice to slam the puck into the back boards isn't impressing anyone.

Then on the other side you got Weber, who is OK now, but good luck with that 7.8 mil contract for the next 6 years when you getting it while he's 34.
That's one of the worst contracts in the whole league at this point. They signed that back in the day when the league was stupid enough to sign players till they were 40 years old to massive contracts. What a dumb ass move that was. Why the hell would TOR ever want to take that garbage contract onto a good young team. Hell I'd rather over pay Nylander than bring that soon to be dead weight massive cap hit on board.

Haven't you proved my point? The original post was to make the Leafs better this year for a Cup run. You're quote about Poehling....doesn't seem to imply he might be NHL ready this year, although I agree with you....he shows promise. But to put him as 3C this season....that's iffy at best. You're right he might be best piece in the trade, but might not be want the Leafs need this year.
Petan is not a cap dump. He can sent the Marlies without any implications.
Ceci....he's an NHL regular though he might have to be traded for cap reasons.
You're right about the Weber contract, and in the past few years he hasn't been able to stay healthy for a season. If the Leafs are going for a Cup run as the original post suggested, I certainly don't make this deal as Leaf.

Why would you want Weber's contract and injury issues? Also, he may retire soon due to all his injuries then you have to pay some of that recapture penalty. I know Nashville will pay the most of it but still. Not a good move at all I think.

I was under the impression that the preds paid all of the recapture.

I looked up the penalty on weber and yes you are actually correct for weber's situation preds will pay all of the recapture penalty if he retires next season. Here's the site I looked at: https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/2016/6/29/12061696/Salary-Cap-Recapture-Montreal-Canadiens-PK-Subban-Shea-Weber-Nashville-Predators--Flyers-Offer-Sheet

Recapture penalities depends on the "front loading" of the contract. In Weber's case, the Preds paid the front loaded portion...hence they are hit with recapture (if he retires). Luongo, the Canucks paid most of the front loading, and the Panthers some. It's a complicated formula...let the experts figure it out.
