An Eriksson trade that I think could work

Created by: Watty1
Team: 2019-20 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 22, 2019
Published: Oct. 22, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Given Pittsburgh's injury situation, I think Eriksson could help their top 9 and might get a small spark with a change of scenery. The Canucks would eat 40% of his money and Pittsburgh only owes him $8m for the remaining two years.

The Canucks are saddled with 3 more years of Johnson's contract but he could be of some use for us since he could fill in on the bottom pairing if there are any injuries, but his cap hit would not be onerous if he spends the remainder of the contract in Utica. While I'm sure Aquilini would not be thrilled with sending another contract to Utica, I do think Baertschi will either return to the team or will be sent to a new NHL home at some point, he is too good of a player for the AHL. Pittsburgh's injuries to Malkin + Rust means that they have to move some guys like McCann and Galchneyuk to the middle, meaning there would be room on the wing for someone like Eriksson.

It's not a great deal for either side but one that might be necessary to move two players who don't fit in their current organization, while filling depth in positions of need.

Pittsburgh wins that trade. How much are you saving on the cap for adding 1 year?

I thought Loui had 3 years left not 2? Either way I'd still take that trade, 3.5 for 3 for a bottom 6/13th F when healthy vs 3.25 for 4 for a bottom pair/ 7th d man

so all im seeing is that Vancouver saves 250k (vice versa for Pens) I guess I could see Erikkson doing something if hes with Sid or Geno. i suppose its an ok idea for both teams

Fair point, but for the Canucks It's more to clear the roster space. They have cap trouble anyways, so it's not really about saving money as it is making room on the roster to get someone like Baertschi back up. Johnson could help the team right now because Edler/Tanev have a history of injuries and I think Johnson could be fine in that #6 spot as insulation for this season. He would at least provide something that Eriksson is not, that's all. The money is irrelevant for the most part in this deal.

Basically, Johnson becomes a more expensive Alex Biega and for this season that could prove to be somewhat valuable. And in the summer, should the team want to move him, his contract has no restrictions and a smaller hit or he just plays in Utica. The Canucks won't get anything tangible back for Eriksson and he is just $6m in cap space being wasted. I would rather pay $5.75m for a guy who will play some minutes in the 6/7 role than someone who is sitting in the press box every night and contributing nothing up front, while a guy like Baertschi is getting 2 pts a night in the AHL and they can't make room for him.

Eriksson still can still kill penalties and the team has a glut of defensive forwards who are younger and cheaper. If given the right centre he might still be able to score some goals, but he is so unhappy here it's reflecting in his play. It's just time to try and cut bait and make something work on the trade front.

Eriksson could help you in your top 9, but it's not a cost saving move cap wise. The Canucks wouldn't have to pay his signing bonus next summer, which would be a plus, but it's more so they make room in their forward group and would add to their D. I like our defence but we are an injury away from being real thin so I think Johnson would actually help the Canucks this season in a 6/7 role.

Yeah but you are taking on the extra year. That's why it sucks.

This is the kind of deal it would take to move Eriksson. With that said, I don't think retaining anything significant for 3 years is a good move. I really don't like having dead cap space like the Spooner buyout. If something could be worked out where we don't have to retain (at least as much) with the same trade structure I'd rather look at that. That would mean adding more contracts as both teams are at the cap.
