Description

The Rantanen injury on Monday night against St. Louis did not look good. I am hoping that Vladislav Kamenev gets an opportunity to jump into the lineup while Rantanen is out.
If he misses really significant time, let’s say 2+ months, is it worth exploring a trade for a top six forward? In my opinion, they only have 5 top six forwards when everyone is healthy - MacKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Kadri, Burakovsky. I like Donskoi a lot, but I think to be a contender in the playoffs, they need one more top six guy. Donskoi hypothetically moves down to the third line with Jost & Compher, giving them a very solid top three lines. With Rantanen out, does it make sense to go after another forward right now?

I think even with rants healthy they should target a top 6 forward on the move. the problem youll find right now though, whos out of the playoff race at this time? who is going to move a top 6 forward right now thats not a bad contract top 6 like parise?

Definitely a concern. I think there are some teams that know they’re out of it (Ottawa, Detroit, LA, etc.) but that means your selection is a lot more limited. I would guess they try out a few different guys in the top six before they look at a trade - Jost, Compher, maybe Nichushkin or Kamenev, potentially even a call up of Kaut.

detroit i dont think has the sellable trade chip at forward or defense. their trade chips are howard and bernier. ottawa has a couple but are they true top 6 forwards? LA same thing, do you want jeff carter? toffoli is 100% a deadline deal because they want a bidding war for him.

At least a first, Colorado’s first is going to be in 25-31 so maybe add a guy like Kamenev or Kaut. Or Mtl will be willing to do 1vs1 Girard

I don't know how long Jost will last on the top line, he seems to do much better in a third line role so far, but i guess if there's a time to prove yourself it's now. Burky had taken rants spot in preseason and practice before rants had signed so we might see something like that as well again. But i don't think we rush into a trade right now, we signed all these guys in the offseason for depth and now we really get to see if they are gonna pay off.

i was thinking he has at least 1st round pick value (wasn't sure about the extra prospect) 20+ goals in 5 straight seasons
he also isnt a one year rental

Won't happen for Girard. Be realistic.

I think Habs Fan could expect a protected 1st and maybe a guy like Kamenev (adding pick to balance things out)
