They are who we thought they were

Created by: TMarch
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 24, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In the immortal words of Dennis Green "They are who we thought they were! And we let them off the hook!"

The team isn't good. It's has 5-ish forwards, 4 defenseman, and 1 goalie. Bringing kids into a dumpster fire won't help. Run the vets out there until you get Byfield (i'm still torn between Byfield and LaFreniere, but it could just be a matter of who's available at that time, I lean Byfield).

Also, it's not like the kids are lighting up GR. Veleno has no points in 6 games, Zadina has 1 goal (and is still snakebitten), Seider has looked good, but has 1 point and is a plus 3 in 6 games (his only 6 games on NHL ice). Kaski has 1 goal and is a -3.

Svech and Rass look really good, but Rass is still learning to be a C at the pro level. I think Svech should be playing in the NHL. He just needed some confidence and to make sure he can trust his knee.

Until March, leave the kids in GR as much as possible. Give them some auditions if they are doing well, but let them gel in GR.

With Glendening out (at least for a bit), and Erne on IR, don't call up another forward just yet. Run the lines below, and if necessary, play 11F/7D. Let the kids gel.

I agree. This years a write off which is fine. Hopefully the NHL gifts us a top 3 pick for once, like bigger market teams Chicago and New York magically did last year. Lafrienere is the cream of the crop. If we don't get 1st I agree Byfield would look pretty good behind Larkin. Perfetti could be a good player too almost Patrick Kane-esque. Trade Green hes looked horrible. Svech has impressed me with his small sample size, looks confident out there.

Of course as a team this year is write off . But what is important is the 10? players on the NHL roster can they develop into good long term NHLers. Add another 8 in Grand Rapids and another 10 drafted and unsigned . That's potential core for the Wings when they hope to true contenders again.

its pretty obvious why letting the kids gel in GR over loosing every night in Detroit is a way better idea. I already think its going to negatively impact guys like hronek and cholo but there isn't much choice theyre our only options at the moment. The blue line and sorry to the kids theyre trying and growing is probably the worst nhl set ive ever seen. its sad to say and even harder to watch. you can see AA is going to burst out any minute and hirose despite trying to do to much is talented this is all the larkin line and thats it. they take dumb penalties and as soon as something doesn't go their way they fall to pieces. I get the skill aspect and lack their of but they just look unprepared. I dont think the coach is all to blame but at some point you need to do something. loosing is what happens with a team as flawed as this one but atleast put up a fight.

I really think this is mental. He missed a WIDE open net this weekend, hit a couple of posts, and lost a few pucks in prime scoring spots. He's getting in the areas he needs to, and he's engaged defensively (don't let the -5 fool you too much). I think once the puck starts to settle down, he'll rip off a good point streak. He's 3rd on the team in shots, (Puempel, Terry/Ras, then Z) and is playing the 1st PP unit.

BTW: My 10 players are (these are guys I think could play on any team in the league right now):

Larkin
Mantha
Bertuzzi
AA
Hirose
Cholo
Hronek
DDK
Nemeth
Howard

I'm still on the fence with Ehn. I think Svech will eventually make this list.

The reason why I'm leaning Byfield is Stanley Cup contenders tend to have 2 very high end/elite Cs (TOR, TBL, PIT, BOS, STL, WSH, WPG - not necessarily a perfect science with EDM, but still). LW are a little easier to find (not a knock against Lafrienere). Cs and Dmen always carry more weight on teams, they have the puck more than wingers, and have more responsibility.
