Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 25, 2019
Published: Oct. 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
*Why Toronto does it*

Out: 1st Line RW, bottom pairing Dman, depth forward
In: 1st line LW, #1 Dman, bottom 6 power forward

This clearly makes them a better team this year and probably the favourites to win the Stanley Cup. The Leafs improve at 5v5 and on the PP as long as they give PP1 the majority of the time.

Since Marner is younger and signed long term this is a big risk. But with the salary retained on Subban in addition to losing the 11 million attached to Marner they will be able to resign Hall for big money (or another UFA). Ideally Toronto would have a deal in place with Hall before they make this trade. They should also be able to resign Jake Muzzin, as well as Mikheyev, Dermott, Gauthier, and Timashov.

2020-21 Leafs Lineup (if Hall resigns)

Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Hall-Tavares-Hyman
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Timashov-Gauthier-Moore

Rielly-Subban
Muzzin-Dermott
Sandin-Liljegren

*Why NJ does it*

Rather than lose Hall for nothing they are able to get one of the best young wingers in the league to go along with their young stars such as Hischier and Hughes. They’ll also get another high draft pick this year to add to that core. Losing their best dman hurts, but he is only signed for 2 more years following this year. They can afford to retain Subban’s for those 2 years while Hughes is still on his ELC.

Devils decline, Hall is better than Marner and Subban is better than Ceci. Simmonds is better than Petan.

There's no way in hell the Devils are retaining 4 million on Subban. And also he is not a number one defenseman anymore either js

Would you rather have Hall for a season where you wont make the playoffs or would you rather have Marner for 6 years in his prime while your other core players are also in their prime? Pending UFAs don’t fetch the highest return in trades

this isnt marner vs hall. its marner and nothing for hall, a 3rd/4th line nhl caliber winger with grit and a top 4 right shot dman that can actually play the game of hockey.

If i were a devils fan, i trade hall to the western conference for picks or young ASSETS. Petan and Ceci ARE NOT ASSETS LEAFS FANS.

I don’t disagree with the Devil’s players being better. But if you look past this season (one where the Devil’s probably don’t make the playoffs) then the trade looks like Marner in his prime locked up for 2 years of a retained Subban. Seems stupid for NJ not to accept? Maybe i’m wrong.

Petan and Ceci certainly aren’t assets. They’re in the trade for cap reasons.
Again, Hall isn’t resigning. Would you rather lose him for nothing, or trade him at the deadline for a 1st and a prospect? Then trade Simmonds for a 4th or 5th? NJ didn’t give up much for Subban and he isn’t playing great for them.

except its not marner for 2 years of subban retained its marner for hall with a contract extension and a top 4 dman for cheap due to massive retention. No you are way off on valuation. a realistic hall trade WITH a contract extention if you want subban is marner dermott and kapanen might need to throw a pick in as well to entice devils for hall, subban NO RETENTION, and simmonds.

ide rather take my chances at resigning hall than trading him for an overpaid marner. so subban should just be retained 50% and given away? got it.

I said ideally for Toronto they have a deal in place before the trade. Didn’t say it was a must. I’d settle for no deal in place and just taking their chance. Do you remember what the Devils traded for Subban? Not much at all.

how much retention was on the deal when they traded for subban? Thats why it wasnt much... we both agree he isnt worth trading for at 9.5 but you think he doesnt carry value at 5.5? thats a joke.

Subban retained at nearly 50% still isn’t worth Marner. What do you think Hall’s trade value at the deadline would be?

with extension: see stones deal last year. without extension: a little more than what cbj gave for duchene because hall is the better player. Marner with a contract isnt equal to hall with a contract in my mind. goal scoring winger is worth more than playmaking winger.

Sure, I agree Hall is the better player. Then the trade would have to be without extension which is what I thought at first, just added the “ideally” part in at the end because obviously that would be ideal.

So Duchene got a 1st and a conditional 1st (that everyone knew was extremely unlikely to be met) . That begs the question: is Marner’s value the same as a retained Subban, a late 1st, and the difference between Hall and Duchene?
