Trade or sit mayfield

Created by: Isles777
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 25, 2019
Published: Oct. 25, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toews-mayfield pairing has been a liability to start the season. Mayfield is making the same mistakes he was making before Trotz became HC.

Noah Dobson has shown once again he’s ready to be a regular. Nick leddy was the best defenseman tonight with 2 G , 1A but Dobson was the 2nd best with solid defensive play and a 78.09 xG%. Let the kid play , he already makes the team better.

Mayfield is a very interesting case because of his contract, how he performed specifically last season (taking that big jump to a bigger role, tougher role, PK time, etc.). I am not sure selling low, or trading him right now, gives you that potential value unless the Isles want to acquire futures. I would say 100% the Leafs would open for business considering the term of AAV of his deal IF the Isles were prepared to be reasonable with their ask, say Bracco, Petan and a mid-range pick. Would that satisfy the Isles? I am not sure. It's been tough to determine Bracco's value because all signs from his performance last season would point to him being an NHLer but our coach DOES NOT like him, or his style of play, for one reason or another.

Mayfield is too good to be a 7D but not good enough where he should be playing over Noah Dobson. He’s a bottom 4 Dman. Same with boychuk, but with his contract he isn’t going anywhere. I’m saying to trade him because it’s frustrating to to see the future top pairing Dman being healthy scratched and he’s not going back to juniors, so why not trade mayfield while he still has value. If they make him the 7D, he would lose trade value IMO.

I think the islanders would be looking for a middle 6 winger in a trade for mayfield with picks involved as well. I doubt they would be interested in prospects considering they have wahlstrom, bellows, and holmstrom knocking on the door.

I hear you, I just don't think there is a team out there willing to give up an NHL-calibre top-9 (is that what you meant by middle 6 winger, or top-6?) for Mayfield, at this present time. Better play and more important minutes without issue, would obviously up Mayfield's value for a future deal though, and the Isles may be trying to showcase him to other teams at present.

I think mayfield, B level prospect, and a 2nd/3rd could bring back a versatile winger who can play on the 2nd or 3rd line.

This is the 3rd game Noah Dobson has been either the 1st or 2nd best isles defenseman and he can’t continue to sit for long stretches. Isles are in a tough spot, but it’s a good problem to have.

Is Mayfield tradeable for picks/prospects only? If so, what is his value?

I dont think so, I believe the islanders would add picks with mayfield to acquire a middle 6 F. I would say his value just in picks is a 2nd round pick. Solid #4 - #5 Dman on a great contract and an effective pker.

Just saw this - was working on a similar idea. I think LAK makes sense. Two trade ideas: Toffoli and Kovalchuk. Combo of Mayfield/prospect/contingency pick

Definitely interested in toffoli. Kovalchuk is old, slow and has a big cap hit

I retained half on Kovy, he's producing this year. Not the perfect answer but would help us out in the right direction

The fact that he has another year after this worries me, toffoli would be perfect.

Devin Shore straight up. RFA as opposed to Toffoli's UFA.

Here's another thought: Mayfield, Koivolu and this year's second for Kapanen.

That's too much for Kapanen IMO. It's closer to Mayfield and a mid round pick. TOR has zero flexibility

I think Koivula is our 3C of the future, maybe more. The fact he has such slick hands at his size is ridiculous

In my opinion, Isles got a steal when they drafted Dobson, because in my opinion, he was a top-6 player in his draft class and I honestly thought Detroit was going to draft him, Boqvist, or Quinn Hughes instead of what they ended up doing by draft a forward. So really, it was only a matter of time (for development) before Dobson was ready to step in and make an impact. Here's the problem, the Islanders are blessed with a cupboard full of good young defencemen, and particularly, good quality prospect D. It's a good problem to have, but there is 6 regular D spots on the team per night, so what are they to do? They could gamble on one, or a few, and trade them, like dealing Mayfield for example, but it might turn out that had the Isles had a little bit more patience with this kid, he could easily be a top-4 D and a go-to guy for shutdown roles. So, it's kind of second-guessing oneself, and that sucks. So I think by doing this "by committee" approach and rotating people in and out of the D core, it's at least trying to give this coaching and management group some more info and data points to consider.

It will certainly be interesting to see what the Isles do in the near future with their depth at D.

Leafs would part with Johnson before they part with Kapanen, in my opinion, just solely based on overall game and defensive work. On the flip side, I think the Isles are cringing for offense that they wouldn't care much whether they got Johnson or Kapanen, as their interest is to up the top-6, and more specifically, the offense.

Based on Leafs' needs, I gotta think that they'd want Bode Wilde, a way cheaper option, obviously then Pulock or Dobson. So what do the Leafs need to add, in your opinion to complete this deal --> Mayfield and Wilde for Johnson and __________? Let me know. I'd assume that the Leafs aren't prepared to give up any of their top prospects in this deal and would not want to part with a 1st round draft pick. My thought is Mayfield, Wilde and a 2nd for Johnson and Barrie (without an extension worked out). Thoughts?
