The choice for MN on who to expose was between Brodin and Dumba. Going 4-4 and letting Vegas have the choice of Coyle, Granny, Nino, or Zucker was more likely than Spurgeon being exposed.

MN had LD depth with Suter, Brodin, Scandella, Olofsson, and Reilly. Dumba was still lost in the d-zone most of the time, but the only RD depth was Spurgeon, Dumba, Brodin (offhand), and Prosser. Scandella/Dumba was an awful pairing that season too.

Why is Theodore in this trade? Haula was the other player that went to Vegas.

Haula played himself out of the lineup after the Hanzal trade, to the extent the Wild brought JEE over from the SHL and burned a slide year of his ELC. Haula's days in MN were done after that.

Tuch had a meh year in the AHL and looked like a lost puppy in the cup of coffee he did get in the NHL that season.

There was never remotely a chance of Spurgeon being left exposed. As wabit said, it was Dumba or Brodin and personally I think they only exposed Dumba because there was a deal in place. If Vegas took Brodin or Scandella, you still had a respectable top 4.

The re-do would have been Vegas picking Dumba, and not having Tuch/Haula. Spurgeon was on their protected list.

The problem was Scandella/Dumba was a bad pair. Scandella was awful for the entire season. Dumba was still more Dumba55 than a reliable d-man. Brodin/Folin took 2nd pair duties away from them early in the season.
