The Habs wouldn't trade Gallagher for Nylander, let alone add Petry on top of it.

Except that both players will be UFAs at the end of the season and I don't see the Habs resigning either for what they will likely get on the open market. They could probably get a better package of picks and prospects from another team, but that isn't really what Montreal needs and there aren't many other contenders who can afford/need to move a young proven scorer of Nylander's caliber for rentals

That's the exact reason the Leafs would say no. The Mayfield trade is good, but the Habs trade is only good for a year. You trade prospects for rentals, not established 60-point scorers.
I'd rather have 5 years of Nylander over 1 year of Petry and Gallagher.

I agree that Petry probably won't be re-signed unless it's for a bargain, but Gallagher is almost guaranteed to be kept by Bergevin. He's the team's heart and soul (and the GM's favorite player). His contract will likely be longer than we'd like, but it's better than him not being on the team. I just don't see them trading him.

Makes absolutely ZERO sense from Montreal side. Z-E-R-O. No chance. Gallagher alone is worth more than Nylander and a 2nd round pick.
You probably haven't watched the Habs play enough.

This is a SOLID no from the Habs.

The Habs will sign BOTH Gallagher and Petry. Mark my words. Unlike Toronto, the Habs cap space is more fluid and flexible.
Apart from Toronto, a UFA doesn't automatically signal the player will go elsewhere.

There, have someone "think" that the Leafs would be a winner in that deal. They wouldn't. Obviously the Habs would laugh out loud and say no.
Nylander alone for Gallagher is a solid no from the Habs. And Petry? He's extremely underrated.
And Nylander has way too many years left on a huge cap hit. No grit. No thank you.
