Some More Rebuild Ideas

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
. . . prompted by a couple of posts I've seen today.

I'm trying to acquire some right-handed forwards, a passable replacement for Brodin and an eventual replacement for Suter, plus two first-round draft picks. The outline of the Zucker trade was suggested by a Boston fan. Montreal might not want to part with Evans (shown on the LTIR because he's not quite NHL-ready) or Romanov, so I've suggested alternatives.
Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
  2. Kuhlman, Karson
  3. 2020 1st round pick (BOS)
2.
MIN
  1. Evans, Jake
  2. Romanov, Alexander [Reserve List]
  3. 2021 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Ikonen or Ylonen instead of Evans?
Brook or Fleury instead of Romanov?

You are not getting Romanov that's for sure, we need to keep him AND add a good defensmen to fix our left side so we need both
Evans, fleury and a 1st 2021 (the 2020 draft is in MTL i dont think Bergevin gives his first)

Montreal say no, even with all your alternatives.
Brodin is just not worth as many assets.

You are going to be very disappointed when thats not even close to what you are going to get for either of them.

I'll file this. We may be revisiting this subject in 2020.

Yes, that's why I made it the 2021 first and also included the alternatives for Romanov.

I think Brodin is every bit as valuable as Muzzin. And Montreal needs a first-class LD more than Toronto did.

Your free to think that but most stats say Brodin isn't nearly as good as Muzzin, has the same amount of term that Muzzin had at the time of that trade and the difference in age isn't all that important either do to them being mid career and not having a lot of term. Montreal does need a first-class LD, and I'm sure they would give up a good package for one if they were available, but Brodin is more of a middle of the pack 2nd pairing guy. If Mete takes even a minor step forward this season Brodin would barely be an improvement on him if he was at all.

Fair enough. And well-reasoned and well-put.

Brodin is NOT a middle of the pack 2nd pairing guy! He is somewhere between a low-end 1st or a high-end 2nd pairing guy all day long! At the deadline, if he fits a couple of team’s needs, he should easily be worth a playoff team’s 1st rounder.

Romanov and the 1st are untouchable, as Bergevin stated. It wouldn't make sense to pay that price for 1.5 years of Brodin.

Ikonen (fast middle 6 center), a 2nd and Kulak is the best offer you could get out of Montreal IMO for a 2nd pairing guy that would become in fact MTL first pair LHD.

Plz file this too smile

I don't get to watch many Wild games, so all I can go off of are the raw numbers, and they put him in the late 30 early 40's among LHD, although depending on what stats people value more he could be higher or lower. Also, I figure he will get more than a playoff teams 1st rounder, but not anywhere near what this trade is. Since MTL is the destination in this trade I will use them as an example, Brodin for the better of MTL 2020 2nd rounders (which becomes MTL 2020 1st if they make the conference finals), and a conditional 2nd in 2021 (becomes a playoff protected 2021 1st if MTL makes the playoffs in either season, conditions removed and remains a 2nd if the 2020 pick becomes a 1st), and a 2022 3rd rounder if Brodin resigns. Maybe even add a prospect not named Poehling, Primeau, Romanov, Caufield or Brook and adjust picks accordingly. If Brodin is the answer in MTL it all but guarantees them a playoff teams 1st rounder in the next two years, plus a 2nd and maybe more.

This is Brodin in a nutshell: top 10% skater in the world who can skate backwards as fast as some nhlers skate forwards. Very good positional defender with a very good, active stick. He is a breakout machine! His skating allows him to get to pucks earlier than most and he makes very smart, very quick decisions with the puck. He can also skate out of trouble and get the puck out of the D zone by himself. He has nice (not elite) hands and an under-rated and an under-utilized shot. He doesn’t put many points up mostly because of his passive nature. He will wow you with a rush or a great shot once in a while, but needs to do this more often! IMO he would be the perfect pairing for a Weber/Ristolainen/Larsson-type of RHD.

Honestly if MTL did trade for him I figure their first thought would be to pair him up with Petry, just to have a strong defensive dman on each of the top 2 pairings. How did you like the trade idea btw?

I would insist on the 2020 pick being a 1st and I would probably be satisfied with that plus a mid-level right-shot prospect. Or exchange the prospect for a 2021 4th and have conditions that it can move up to a 2nd if the Habs make it to the conference finals this year or next.

Considering the draft is in MTL the only way they're giving up this years 1st is if the have the kind of season that makes the fans forget about not having a pick on the first day of the draft, or if it is so insanely in their favour that there is a chance the league doesn't approve the trade. MTL is probably a bad landing spot for Brodin for Wild fans to contemplate.
