Not so sure MTL is the position to give up any defensive guys although that is pretty good return.

With fleury who is stepping up i think that if Montreal is out of the playoff by the deadline petry will be dealt. We have weber who us lock up for 7 more years and petry will be looking for long term deal after is current contract. I think montreal will want to get younger on the right side with fleury and brook and juulsen petry is expendable

very good trade, Toronto would improve by a lot. however Habs have to say no since Petry has become our number one and I think he could be a top 3 defenseman for another 4-5 years

The leafs don’t need defenseman who can put up a bunch of points, they already have Reilly and barrie. Petry wouldn’t get any PP time since Reilly is pp1 and barrie is pp2. They need a shutdown defenseman.

He’s not worth much to the leafs, and they’re certainly not giving up their best D prospect who can play a two way game and step right in next season.

Petry value is around the same as muzzin when he was traded last season - so a 1st and a decent prospect. If a team is desperate maybe add a 2nd round pick in 2021

That pretty much what montreal received in that deals. Petry is playing 23 minutes a night against top opponent he would be toronto best right handed defenseman right away. He is worth gold for maple leafs who clearly get beat every night on that right side team put pressure and dump the puck in that corner and they don’t have a answer yet. Petry is a great skater who defend very well, great stick, good vision and got a bullet. This would help the leafs right away. Leafs have dermott on the left side with rielly but the right side is simply horrible and lijegren is their only nhl prospectalmost ready

It's Petry's term of just 1.75 years the makes the trade not desirable to the Leafs. Sandin is needed next year and for at least six years of control and at a ELC for couple of years.

Not to mention that the kid is 18 and looks like he has the makings of becoming a #1 at some point down the road.

19 and no chance at all at being number one defenseman. Toronto will go another 60 years cup drought with that defence

Ok, thanks.

Nevermind what happens in the next 60 years, but given that you can so clearly see the future, do you mind telling me the lotto numbers for this Friday?

No team can predict their teams Dmen for the next sixty years. What does Petry or Sandin have to do with the Leafs defence in the year 2079. If Petry is such a difference maker, why hasn't the Habs been racking up Cup appearances recently? Even Petry and Cousens for Hyman and Ceci, doesn't help the Leafs that much this season

You know that your defense is trash right? Petry is 10 time better than ceci open your eye buddy. If you still have ceci on your top 4 by the end of the year s guarantee your beiing exit again in first round

C'mon I know Petry is better than Ceci, but having Petry doesn't increase the Leafs chances that much to exit the first round, especially at the cost of long term Sandin and the 1st pick. Sorry it's terrible value trade. Again if Petry is such a different maker, why don't the Habs keep him and so they don't have a first round exit.
Having Petry and Weber haven't helped the Habs much advantage, it's silly to think Petry is going to help the Leafs THAT much. Please if Petry is sooo sooo much of difference maker, Habs better keep him.

Habs are rebuilding, and since weber is sign for 7 more years petry is the one that will get trade. Montreal got cale fleury who’s been playing extremely well and juulsen and brook who will be ready inna near future. Petry would make the leafs a better team and yes they would automatically be in better position to make a run in playoff. Team that are depth on defence have success in playoff that’s historically proven. Your cup window is not open for that long since you have to extend frederik anderssen next year and you have to sign 5 defenseman 4 forward and a backup goalie with around 22 million next summer. getting a defenseman the caliber of petry with that cap hit would be great for the leafs who are a piece or two from a championship team.

Nonsense if you think the window closes this year. Quit this fascination that the Leafs need Petry and he going to vault the Leaf into true contenders. Yes I know Petry would improve the Leafs this year, but at what cost? Seven controllable years of Sandin and first....no thanks. Plus Hyman is better than Cousens I knew the Leafs would probably be worse than last year when they lost three good NHLers and the three replacements aren't as good. Good Dmen can be traded to many teams. But over the past few years on this site, it's almost biblical that the Leafs have to overpay for any RHD.

They will have to overpay like they did for muzzin. They won’t get a great defenseman with a cap hit of 5 millions for crap return or on july 1st. Plus with anderssen who will command at least 8 millions in 2 years and reilly who will get in the 9 millions range toronto better use the next 2 season because after that it will be very hard. They will loose either muzzin or barrie this summer and does not have a stud in ahl that can step up annplay 25 minutes a game. If dubas doesn’t want to move a forward to create space you are screwed

What nonsense again. UFAs come and go all the time from teams. Do the Leafs even want (at the going rate) or can afford Reily or Anderson when they are UFA. No one knows. But please the Leafs aren't unique in not signing their own UFAs. Of course the the Leafs don't think they are were going to Barrie when they acquired him. And by his poor play this year why would they? Muzzin has probably been the best Leaf Dman yep he might gone too? Yes, you are correct the Leafs will probably have to trade a forward...either Johnsson or Kapanen would be my choice to get max value and use that cap space to use on a Dman or two. That's the purpose of trades, trading from a position of strength and getting a player to fill a need. The Leafs feel they had NHL ready wingers with the Marlies when some Leaf winger is traded.
I figure the Leafs have 7.5m to sign three Dmen after Reilly, Liljegren, Sandin and Dermot are with the Leafs next season. 7.5m. for three spots. Trade Kapanen for future and replace him with Korshkov that's another 2.1m. So 9.6m for three Dmen. What's the problem? No the Leafs aren't screwed. They do have the ability to trade good value player for either cap space or other value players.
Gee, you think the Leafs are the only team with cap issues?
