Nope, no way in hell does Minnesota retain 2 million for 6 years without a good return. You want a top tier LD with term (and retained) look at the Kessel trade between Toronto - Pittsburgh as your reference

as a habs fan id be okay with adding, but I'd want them to retain at least 2.5+ before we add picks or prospects.

The Kessel trade was 1.2M retention for 7 years in exchange for an A prospect a 1st and a 3rd.
For 2.5M retention it will probably cost an extra 1st

Ryan Suter isn't waiving his NMC for Montreal, His Wife is from Minnesota and he chose to go there for a reason. Montreal would be the last place he'd probably waive to.

Karlsson's wife is from Ottawa and he chose to go to San Jose. Don't discredit the possibility of Suter going to MTL because of a significant partner lol

I'd also argue Kessel is a better player than Suter so, but I agree to a point.

Bottom line is, The he chose to go to Minnesota so she could be home. And he'd still be close to his Madison, Wisconsin home town. He's not waiving to go further east into Canada.
