You cannot retain money on more than 2 contracts. Also Winnipeg isnt giving up a 1st and 2nd in a loaded draft for subpar players

I like the Montreal trade for both teams but I think you're much too optimistic on the other two. I like Kovalchuk a lot and think he's been badly treated so far but even I don't dream that he'd bring a first-round pick. And I don't think Kempe is the #2 C the Jets are looking for or that Forbort is their hope for improving their defense.

Each team can actually retain salary on up to three contracts at a time. You can't retain salary on the same contract more than twice.

Toffoli's trade value right now is a 2nd and a 3rd (or prospect equivalents) without retained salary. With 50% retained, that price goes up.

As you get closer to the deadline, that price decreases (2nd plus a conditional asset if he re-signs, no additional cost for retention).
