Hall Trade from Karlsson template

Created by: SankFeravalli

Initial Creation Date: Nov. 2, 2019

Description
Not that this is totally realistic, but....

Here is my attempt to put together a Hall trade that’s roughly the same as what San Jose gave up for Erik Karlsson.
Hall is 1 year younger than Karlsson was when he was traded last year, but their stories are similar - super star players on underachieving teams, pending UFAs, and both have a recent injury history. Here’s the breakdown:

Taylor Hall = Erik Karlsson
Brett Seney = Francis Perron

JT Compher = Chris Tierney
Nikita Zadorov = Dillon DeMelo
Martin Kaut = Josh Norris
Igor Shvyryov = Rudolfs Balcers
Trades
NJD
  1. Compher, J.T.
  2. Kaut, Martin
  3. Shvyryov, Igor
  4. Zadorov, Nikita
  5. 2020 1st round pick (COL)
  6. 2021 2nd round pick (COL)
  7. 2022 2nd round pick (COL)

you know the players have much different value tho right? DeMelo is hardly a 6 and Zads is a 4. Kaut is a top prospect while Norris is more of a B. not to mention the pick haul. OH and he's expiring.

I disagree.
DeMelo is a bottom pairing defenseman, but Zadorov hasn’t been able to establish himself as a top 4 guy either. His physicality and smooth stride for a big man makes him a flashy and exciting player, but his decision making with the puck and in his own end continue to hold him back. He’s had plenty of opportunities to take a top 4 job over the last three seasons and still finds himself on the third pair. DeMelo was 25 at the time of the trade, Zadorov is 24 this year.
Kaut is a very solid prospect who plays well-rounded game and should be a slam dunk to play in the NHL. But his realistic ceiling is probably a 2nd line winger, maybe even a high-end third liner. His two-way game ought to earn him a job somewhere in an NHL lineup within the next twelve months, but he has struggled to produce consistent offense in a year + in the AHL. I think Shane Bowers would also be a comparable player to Norris.
There’s no difference in the haul of picks. SJ was a top team in the western conference last year just like the Avs are this year.
Karlsson was a pending UFA when he was traded and didn’t sign an extension until after the season.

There's not as much difference between Norris and Kaut as you seem to think. Norris was dominating at U of M and at the World Juniors last year, and would likely have been a Hobey Baker finalist if he doesn't go down with a shoulder injury in January. He's off to a great start to his pro career in Belleville.

Also Balcers is way better than Shvyryov.

I don't think this trade gets done, but this is a reasonable comparison given the premise. I just don't think Hall gets close to a Karlsson size deal.

Defensemen are worth so much more than wingers.
It's like saying wingers have the same value as centers.
They don't.

The best comparable for Hall is Stone.
Their per game averages are almost identical. Roughly Same age at trade.

To argue he's worth the same value as a 1RD puck moving defenseman is nonsense.

Maybe when other GMs see what a long term poor trade it was San Jose, they look at your comparison and want nothing to do with making a similar deal. Even worse for San Jose, was trying to justify the EK trade that they signed him to an extension that likely no other team would have offered.

Pharrow's comparison to Brannstrom might be more accurate. And even at that, it kinda came with a extension. The only way Stone could get a 8 year deal was if he signed with his new team (Vegas) before the TDL.

Most of the proposed Hall-to-Colorado deals I have seen on here involve Byram, which is your Brannstrom comparable. I wouldn’t have any interest in that if I were Colorado
