Description
- For this team to be successful, Backlund cannot be the second line centre
- Option 1: Add a top 6 centre to pair with tkachuk or move monahan to L2
- Option 2: Add a top 6 winger and move lindholm to centre permanently
- Willing to trade Kylington, Brodie, Frolik (for salary), 1st or 2nd round pick

Athanasiou on the Wings. He was a 30-goal scorer last year, but hes been off to a bit of a slow start this year. 25yr old RFA. He plays better with better players around him. He's lightning fast so he could easily keep pace with a Gaudreau

Toffoli would be a decent target but not sure if LA would be interested dealing within the division

Ideally id prefer a younger player but i think staal would be a great fit and the lower cap hit is nice. I wonder if frolik and a pick could get a trade done

Im not disagreeing with moving Backlund off of 2c but our best options to push him down the line were Kadri and Schenn (in FA), both of which are no longer available. IMO Backlund is a decent 2C and an elite 3C, he has good synergy with Tkachuk but most people probably do. Getting a 2C upgrade is rather difficult right now and putting either Monny or Lindholm at 2C really weakens our winger depth. I think if we cant find a 2C upgrade in the market Flames should continue to run Backlund there and focus on giving the 2nd line a solid 2RW.

My thoughts before the season was that with Backlund making 5+, if hes not good enough to be 2C then you need to trade him.

Right now the options to land a 2C is thin, AA from Detroit might the best you can get.

Gonna have to give to get.

LA won't do it, article just came out about how Kopitar and Doughty are the main parts and very important to their rebuild. TBH I'm not too interested in his contract, if he was maybe 3-5 years younger yes.

i think he'll be gone by the deadline. there is talk swirling through red wings twitter about how its a real possibility, and even a poll done by a red wings article writer where 75% of people voted yes to moving athanasiou for a 2020 1st round pick. obviously that doesnt matter in the long run, but it just shows you where the fan base is right now
