Seabrooks value Warning RANT

Description
Can someone explain to me the current value of Brent Seabrook? No... I dont mean trade value, of course not stop being silly.

I mean what exactly does he bring to the team nowadays? Whenever I watch him play he seems to do one of two things. The first has to do with when he gets a puck, it seems to me that whenever he has a chance to play the puck he either A. Shoots it as hard as he can down the ice, hoping for a tip or to hit some player on the way, or he trys to handel the puck and turns it over behind the net/on the corner boards, which always leads to a high danger chance against. An example of the latter can be seen on SJS first goal last night. The second thing he does concerns what he does (or more accurately does not do) when he doesn't have the puck... the guy is a pylon, and there have been numerous times this season that a guy has beat him 1 on 1 directly in-front of the goalie. This guy is slow, and every single time he has the puck he seems to make a bad decision.

This is not even to mention what he does on offense, which is not much at all. He has a big shot, but he can't hit the net or make a pass to save his life.

I know what your thinking, we all know that Seabrook is a bad player, why are you beating a dead horse?

Im beating a dead horse because of all of the Seabrook truthers who say that his leadership qualities make his contract or play somehow bearable!

What leadership qualities has he displayed recently? The hawks have been terrible for the last 3 years, playing inconsistent and uninspired hockey. Not only is his play apart of the problem, but he doesn't seem to keep his teammates honest the way an alternate captain should.

So then what is Seabrook's value to the Blackhawks? In my opinion he should be a 7 million dollar benchwarmer, thanks for helping us win the cups now take a seat.

He has negative value. Leadership is hard to quantify and I would say almost 7 million in cap space is more important then leadership. You can always find players with good leadership skills as free agents who could make around 1 million.

I don't know if I have even seen Seabrook play this year. But your opening sentences describes many aging Dmen . They lose speed and mobility and when on the ice, they feel their best/only play is to whack the puck off the boards or hard down the middle.
And your comment on leadership. For the young players arriving those Cups won by Seabrook, seems like previous generation. Young players might look at Seabrooks contract and think this guy shaving my contract or doesn't allow the Hawks to obtain a better player(s) for team success. Hard to think of him as a leader if that is on your mind.

I mean i think you kind of answered your own question Stan. You're a Hawks fan so you probably have a better idea of what's what then I do.

I have a feeling you didn't read my rant...or at least all of it. Everyone under the sun knows that Seabrook has negative value, I want to know what he brings to the hawks.

Dach's chaperone. Dach lives in the Seabrook's house right now.

In all seriousness though...I type this not as a defense or excuse to keep playing him a ton of minutes.

He's a big body. Blocks Shosts. Hits people. Last year they needed more of that. This year they went out and got that with DeHaan and Maatta. I think the biggest reason they'll keep playing him in just about every game is because the rest of the Core might revolt. Kane has been very vocal about his locker room presence.

Again, I'm not saying he should play more. I think he should be a healthy scratch more often and allow the younger guys more development time, but that's probably what Stan and Co. would say.

I doubt young players look at stuff like that, but the point remains the same. Seabrook is not a leader in any other capacity than title.

I find it funny every night when the Hawks play that when Seabrook is in the lineup JC uses him as a top 4 defensemen even after he scratched him for not being good enough. Wouldn’t you think that a guy that got scratched should be playing bottom pair minutes and not be out there at critical times throughout a game? If it was up to me I’d bench Seabrook for Koekkoek and let Seabrook request a trade or retire because no one wants him.

I'm not so sure about that to be honest. I think the intangibles he does bring to the team are still respected by his teammates. The only thing which is an important part of this whole equation is the intangibles are supposed to come second to the on ice performance. It doesn't anymore in his case which defeats the purpose of having the intangibles.

He probably shouldn't be given as high as minutes as he has been but I don't think the coach is playing him these minutes simply because he's blinded by his ineptitude. I think he probably sees/knows things we the fans don't and is doing it with a purpose.

For all we know, coach could be playing him to expose him as much as possible so that he realizes how obviously bad he's playing. Maybe that will eventually convince Seabrook to be stricken with a sudden rash of jock itch and be placed on LTIR.... wink

Maybe Hossa can tell him all about this new treatment he's discovered called:

You are right. Itchy crotch is no laughing matter.

"Are you one of 100 million Americans affected by itchy crotch? Well suffer no longer with Idontwanttoplayanymorebtustillwannagetpaid-a-derm! Just apply directly to the effected area and your cap hit will be gone! but wait! there's more! Not only will the teams cap hit no longer apply to their salary cap, you'll still get compensated for every dollar!! (or at least a good chunk of it). So next time itchy crotch is bothering you, tell it to suck your LTIR!"

I did read your rant, I just wanted to throw my opinion out there. That's why I said it's so hard to quantify leadership
