I'd argue that having 6.875M in dead cap space for the next 5 years is less valuable than that 1st round pick......

Just buy him out. Draft 1-5. Live without that cap space until his contract is done.

The buyout isn't even that bad to be honest. Sucks for 3 out of the 8 seasons, is not great for 1 of those seasons and then basically unnoticeable for the other 4 years after....

Seriously...I think Melnyk would jump at this the day after Seabs next signing bonus. I'm not re-typing everything, but he can SAVE MONEY...swapping Bobby Ryan.

I mean that's what it boils down to if you keep the pick and buy him out. It could even be argued to just keep him on the roster for the 4 years.

If I was Chicago I would keep the pick. The NHL is rigged as hell at the draft with their stupid ass cards instead of a hopper. Chicago is a huge market, they like that, want to keep that TV revenue.

Ottawa should be all over this deal if it’s guaranteed the number 1 pick. Especially if they get the 2nd and 3rd picks too. They have a bunch of overpaid players coming off their cap next year and aren’t going to have to pay a lot for their free agents. And I don’t think they should expect to be that great next year anyways. A team like Ottawa could use the veteran leadership Seabiscuit brings more than Chicago who has several vets other than him.
