Neither of these trades makes them better.

Both teams decline. Barrie for kase would be closer if Barrie wasn't a ufa.

Yup. Would consider it if there was an extension in place, but this makes Leafs worse, and doesn’t help the Ducks in their re-tool.

I imagine an extension would need to be agreed on but the Ducks were looking to trade Kase plus for Faulk so this makes sense.

I think the leafs improve by swapping Kase over Johnsson and joki over Barrie helps long term and short term is a wash. Barrie isn’t returning to the 60pt player he was playing on pp2 and I wouldn’t resign him. So this makes sense to me.

barrie is one of the best powerplay point producers in the nhl and should be on the first unit but babcock probably wont play him there. buffalo only gave up nylander for joki so it would look really bad if they gave up kadri for kerfoot and joki. if barrie was used properly he would look better but it would look really bad on dubas if he were to move barrie for someone he could have given up bracco for. johnson has been a good contributor on the matthews line so i think he should stay there but i really do like kase, kappy has also been amazing on the 3rd line so it would hurt to lose him. it all comes down to usage because barrie is way better then joki but if he fails it is on babcock because it is awful to think he is a shut down defenseman when he is anything but that

I do not really see any benefit to either deal. I think there are better deals out there, and better potential deals involving the Ducks. Aside from potentially filling the back-up role, I really don't see the Leafs making any significant deal until the trade freeze ends after the winter holidays.
