My guess is that no one claims him. Past his prime and too slow for the new game.

Long past due. Old dog can't hunt anymore, all he does is bark at immigrants. He won't be missed.

The purpose of his comment was only to make immigrants aware of the cause.

Not Canadian, but basically all he said was that he wanted people to recognize the ones that fought for their country by wearing a pin. A simple pin.

Are we really that sensitive that someone asking people to wear a pin and recognize their Country on a Holiday is grounds to be fired?

It was how he said it with "Those People" and that opens up such a can of worms about equality, race, etc without actually saying it. Thats enough it todays age to get yourself fired

If he had said "everyone should wear a poppy" he'd be fine. But he choose to use the words "you people". He also mentioned "you people" love to come here and live our way of life, but don't wear poppies.
Specifically saying you people in reference to immigrants shows the underlying racism this man has. He's said "female reporters shouldn't be allowed in the locker room", along with countless other old and out of date takes. While I agree his intention was right, the way he worded it combined with how hes acted in the past shows he should have been off the air a while ago.

So for what it's worth, many people probably agree with everything he said.

But because of how he said it, it's enough to get him fired.

I understand he has a long history of being very outspoken, which probably played a part.

But still, it just sounds like a guy who passionately loves his Country and wants everyone to recognize (with just a small gesture of wearing a pin) that Country and the people that fought for it.

And he gets canned for it. Idk.

Bout time if you ask me. Xenophobic comment or not, he didn't actually give anything of substance to the game in the form of commentary anymore anyway. It was always the same old schtick about keeping your head up and your sticks down, blocking shots, yad yada yada. We make fun of GMs in the NHL for being dinosaurs with their thought process and mentality, we should have held Cherry to the same level for broadcasters/commentators/etc.

Don Cherry had become more of a mascot than a real Canadian hockey figure/pioneer anyway.

Are male reporters allowed in girls locker rooms??

What if a guy who was born male but identifies as a woman??

Or what about a guy born male but identifies as a lesbian??

Or what about a guy born male but identifies as a boston terrier??

Bingo, Its not an isolated incident, he has been toeing this line for a few years now and this was just the spark that ignited the powder keg
Im Canadian, and I haven't cared about Cherry for over a decade, his segments were no longer much watch, he has been senile talking about the game (repeating the same cliches every week) and he just keeps on crossing the lines from hockey talk to politic jabs.

When hockey Canada, HNIC, etc have been promoting hockey as the great equalizer that it sees beyond race, religion and creed....this is a political move to remove a guy that has upset a large selection of people that Hockey Canada and the above mention are trying to tap into.

Its just the world we live in now. It wasn't about wearing the poppy at its core bc its not just new to Canada immigrants who arent wearing it, 3rd/4th generation Canadians are no longer wearing them in either, its really a dying gesture of remembrance. He sees what he wanted to see and took a shot with it.

He openly said women shouldn't be reporters for the NHL, but go off bud. Hope you don't have a daughter one day.

If his critiques and opinions of the game of hockey are no longer relevant, then that's a more valid reason to get rid of him. No point in having someone talk hockey who no longer has anything logical to say about it. That at least makes sense.

Bingo, talking about Bobby Orr and being a coach in the 1970s isnt really resonating with a new generation of kids watching HNIC, which is still the ultimate goal of Sportsnet, Hockey Canada..growing the game He hasn't said anything different from 1990.

Should never have been brought back IMO.

Glad he is gone, it was time to move on long ago from Cherry.

You cant say what he did on TV and think there are no consequences, and this is not even close to isolated incident.

If that's "how he is" then he has no place on a nationally televised broadcast in 2019.

Even putting the xenophobic remarks aside, he's still long past his sell by date. Have you watched Coach's Corner at any point in the last decade? He's Terrible. You're lucky to be able to understand a fifth of what he says.

Oh for sure, still love the guy but he’s losing his marbles. Hope I’m that coherent at 85!!!

And yes heaven forbid we enrage the delicate snowflakes. He was addressing immigrants and said if you enjoy the life here than donate for a poppy and help support the vets that fought to give them this land. I don’t think it’s the worst thing I’ve heard on national television.... today. In case no one noticed he urges every Canadian to do the same not just the new ones.

Maybe you should add that he said it was because he views women as better than men, and that's why he doesn't think they should be in the locker room with a pile of naked men many of whom likely have little sense of modesty. You're trying to make it sound like Don Cherry hates women, when their is no evidence of that.
As for what was said this time, Don Cherry stated that he doesn't see a lot of people wearing poppy's and then encourages/tries to guilt immigrants (people who made the conscious decision to live in Canada) to honour the people who sacrificed everything to make this country the country they now love. It obvious why he singled out immigrants, they are here because they decided to be, while some person born in Canada not wearing a poppy didn't make the decision to be here. Don Cherry simply has an abrasive personality and style of speech. People who make their living by dividing people want to attempt to force a feeling of division among people in this country over it, and it looks like they have succeeded, they managed to convince enough people that Don Cherry is a hate filled person that he's been fired. It's funny really, that the same people angered by this are the ones who voted ,or would have voted if they were Canadian, for a hypocritical blackface wearing liar in the recent election.
