The Kings are trading Kovalchuk and perhaps their highest ceiling prospect for a career AHLer?

Vilardi has some seriously questionable back injuries, which is why I think that the Kings may view him as expendable compared to their other, much healthier prospects. Remember, Marleau netted a 1st round pick, and Kovy and Marleau's deals are very similar. Vilardi's trade value is probably closer to a mid-2nd round pick at this point due to his injury history.

Vilardi has whats called Spondylolysis, he'll be fine in a month and good as new. Gretzky had it. He isn't going anywhere.

Marleau netted a 1st round pick because Toronto desperately needed cap space. The Kings are going to have upwards of $10 million in free space next season. They're not going to pay to get rid of Kovalchuk. Either a team will give up an asset for him, or the Kings will eat his salary and let him sit in the press box. They could buy him out themselves if they wanted the roster slot.

There's zero chance that the Kings will trade Vilardi. He's practicing with the Reign this week and will likely start playing again in less than a month. He's not going anywhere.

The leverage that any team has in getting Kovy is that he wants to play for a contender and probably wants to leave as soon as possible. If some team comes out and is willing to eat the entire contract, you don't think that Rob Blake says yes? Maybe Vilardi is too high of a cost for the reasons that you stated, but a 2nd or 3rd round pick or equivalent prospect seems like fair value.

The Kings are not incentivized to give up anything of value to accommodate Kovalchuk. They could be persuaded to retain salary in a trade to make his cap situation work for another team, but they're not giving up an asset to move him. He'll be swapped for an equally bad contract or traded for a late round draft pick or he'll stay put.

LOL Vilardi????

Yeah that’s a F no from LA. Not going anywhere. Kings aren’t going to pay a team to take Kovi.
