Thoughts on Galchenyuk

Description
If you've been watching the Penguins recently there's been one guy that hasn't really lived up to expectations. Now first off I don't think the Penguins should trade Galchenyuk because he's insanely talented and can produce it's just he hasn't found that consistency yet or found his place in the lineup and I think I might know why.

Chucky has always been a very streaky player. Ask any habs fan and they'll tell you that he'll have a 7 or 10 game run where he's at a point per game pace and looks unstoppable and then he becomes invisible for the next 10. Like last year with Arizona he started the first 9 games with 3 goals and 8 points, then had 3 points in the next 15 games, then had 14 points the next 12 games, then had 1 point in 8 games after. He's done this since his rookie year and I don't see any reason why it would change with the Pens unless he gets some chemistry with either Crosby or Malkin which hasn't happened so far. Lets compare him to Guentzel. He gets 66% of his shots through to Guentzel's 62%. He starts in the offensive zone 58.5% of the time compared to Guentzel's 62.1%. His expected goals for (where shots are coming from compared to league wide shooting percentage for that area) is 0.49 to Guentzel's 0.51 and they both shoot around 4 shots per game. The only difference between the two is that Guentzel usually plays over 20 minutes a night since he plays with Sid whereas Galchenyuk only plays 15 minutes a night. So what do we do? I don't know really. He obviously needs to be playing with good linemates who can get him the puck since he's a sniper whether thats Geno, Sid, or Mccann. Maybe Kahun could be a good playmaker for him to play with since they're both struggling. Maybe try him out on the right side so that he can get off his one timer easier. I wouldn't panic with him yet, he's getting the chances he just needs to execute.

What do you guys think?

No goals in 8 games is not good for a guy who is more than capable of putting the puck in the net. He's had a lot of scoring chances but hasn't gotten anything. There are people on social media saying the Blues want to swap Schenn for him.

I agree, it's obviously not the same value.

I think the problem is the expectations of Galchenyuk when he came to Pittsburgh. He’s a sniper that will score 20 goals because of his shot, but will hold back your team in a lot of areas of the game. But since he was traded for Kessel people have an unrealistic view of the player he’ll be.

Don't forget he was a top 5 pick as well. Expectations were even higher.

I think u need at least a 20-25 game sample size of player & with him being clearly hurt those 1st 2 games of year... So Hes played like basically 7 games of healthy play.
Is he getting a fair shot w/ 87 or 71? ?
He played a period in half w/ Sid for 12-15 min TOI , has 44 min TOI w/ Geno, & 48 min TOI w/ neither ??
- He has had around 0:48 seconds of 1st PP time w/ 87 & 71
- He had 1:34 of 1st PP time before last nite
- He hasnt been on the ice for 1 second of 3 on 3 time ??

Id like to say Im a fan of Chucky but its clear Sully doesnt like him or is he putting him in position to gain some confidence enough... I mean Blueger got out there and Chucky didnt for 3 on 3??
thats just sad...

Chucky is working on packing his bags.

I don't see things changing for him.
His play away from the puck isn't great.
He hasn't scored a single goal.
Those two things are getting him sent down the lines where it will be harder for him to score.
Until there isn't really a place for him.

You can say whatever you want. It's a contract year for him. There is no performance.
He has to play better if he wants the ice time. Sullivan isn't going to hand it to him when other players are simply playing better.
At some point that will boil over, and off he goes.

Spot on analysis Jesus.

I think he's like a Vanek type player. Can produce a very respectable amount of offense but very streaky and definitely no coach's favorite player. Also tends to be a bit of a liability defensively. In a more sheltered role he could probably be a kind of luxury 3rd liner and pp specialist.
