Spezza would have to decide if he wants back to Ottawa or not, since he has the 35+ NTC automatic clause attached to this contract. I think Petan gives Ottawa better value, honestly. Petan, Bracco and a 2nd should be enough here anyway.

Sens won't trade Nilsson. They're going to want to keep a guy like that around until one of our Goalie prospects is ready to go.

Also Sens should be in no rush to bail out the Leafs goalie situation

Deal makes sense value-wise. There's talk about Nilsson having the potential to turn around his career into a starter (sorta like Craig Anderson did), so I would suggest Ottawa doesn't want to part with him.

Not saying this is sustainable (need to see him like this for a full season).

But Nilsson is a top 10 goalie in the league right now on a rebuilding team. This deal may be fair but not sure Ottawa wants to get rid of him unless someone overpays for him.

Does the clause apply to players getting waived? (can he reject teams trying to pick him up?)

Given the option of the sens or bouncing around on the marlies bus... I think he picks the sens.

It is my understanding that it is a NTC, not a NMC, meaning that waiver process/mechanic would still work for someone 35+ in it's normal fashion. So if the Leafs waived Spezza, I believe that any team could put a claim in for him and he would have to accept that assignment. If that player refused to assignment, his contract would be terminated, and the team that waived would suffer the entire hit of that AAV for the seasons remaining on the deal. So, in the case of Patrick Marleau. Say he was waived, but he either did not want to accept the assignment to the Marlies, or did not want to go a team that put in a waiver claim, his contract could get terminated, but the Leafs would be hit with his entire AAV for the years remaining on his deal, so something like $6.25 million against the cap.

That is at least how I understand the process to work with 35+ players.

Yeah I definitely agree. However, because he passed through waivers, I am not sure he is worth much of anything to any NHL team at the moment.
